Number of Awards & Eligibility: The number of awards offered varies annually based on the number of qualified applicants.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be a first-time, first-year student, OR a transfer undergraduate student.
  3. Must plan to attend the University of Maine.
  4. Must have an SAT score of 1120 or higher.
  5. Must be in the top 40 percent of his/her high school class.
  6. Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident.
  7. Must plan to enroll as a full-time student in a minimum of 12 credits per semester in an approved undergraduate program.
  8. Must exhibit diversity, either culturally, personally, or through achievement in the visual and performing arts.
  9. Must be the resident of a state other than Maine.

Description: This scholarship is available for U.S. high school seniors who plan to attend the University of Maine at Orono as an out-of-state student. Eligible applicants must be in the top 40 percent of their class and have an SAT score of 1120 or higher.

Additional Information: The University of Maine Academic Scholarship Program is designed to acknowledge, attract, and retain academically talented and diverse students who seek the intellectual stimulation and opportunities for personal development offered at the state's only comprehensive institution of higher learning in Maine. The scholarship committee will select recipients and determine award amounts based on the following criteria: academic achievement, as reflected by information in the completed application for admission; diversity, as reflected by ethnicity, race, gender, physical challenge, field of academic study, purpose for pursuing higher education, or perseverance in overcoming educational and social obstacles; and significant personal accomplishments beyond the traditional measures of academic achievement, including work experience, field study, or personal accomplishments in spite of adversity. Students selected for academic scholarships may be eligible for one of the following awards: the Presidential Scholarship, the Flagship Scholarship, the Dean’s Scholarship, or the Black Bear Scholarship.

Award Amount: $13,200 to $18,280  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $18,280.

Detailed information about this scholarship is available online on the University of Maine (UMaine) website. The student applies for this scholarship by applying for admission to UMaine. No separate scholarship application is required. Students may apply for admission via any one of the following methods: the University of Maine System online application; UMaine paper application; the Common Application; or the Universal Application. In addition to the completed application for admissions, the student must submit the following: a $40 application fee; an official high school transcript that includes at least the first set of senior grades; official SAT/ACT scores (waived for transfers with more than 12 completed credits or applicants age 20 and older); official college transcripts for all attempted college coursework, if applicable; an essay; and an official school recommendation (for first-year applicants only). *Please note: Auditions/interviews, portfolios and/or applications may be required for consideration for visual and performing arts students; these students should contact the School of Performing Arts at 207-581-4700 or the Department of Art at 207-581-3245 for further information. To be assured of full consideration for this award, the student should apply for admission and be accepted through UMaine's non-binding Early Action Admission program. The deadline for submitting an application for with full aid consideration is March 1. Students who submit their admissions application after this date will only be considered for scholarships on a funds-available basis.
