Fighting to End Drunk Driving Scholarship

On October 3, 2020, a remarkable young man was alive, well, and living life to the fullest. As a U.S. Naval officer, Ensign Samuel Cleghorn looked forward to a bright career ahead of him. “Sam was the epitome of a person of high character, a young man I have known since he was a kid,” said John Fisher, founder and owner of the John H. Fisher law firm. But in the blink of an eye, Sam’s life was ended by a drunk driver. In honor of Sam and the more than 10,000 individuals who have lost their lives every year due to drunk driving, John Fisher has established ‘The Sam’s Legacy – Fighting to End Drunk Driving – Scholarship’ to prevent drunk driving. The $1,000 scholarship will be awarded annually to the applicant who writes the best 500-750 word essay promoting innovative and effective educational, legislative and enforcement programs that help all drivers understand the risks of driving drunk and how to make responsible decisions that ensure their safety as well as the safety of others on the road.

Strong Roots Scholarship

The Richmond Defense Firm strives to serve and defend the citizens of the Richmond area and has developed a strong connection with the people and places of eastern Virginia. It takes time, effort, and patience to build a nurturing relationship with one’s community. In today’s world, there are so many opportunities to live a transient life, to move from place to place and never settle down. Many of us seek a sense of community, but there’s usually a small group of people really working to build that sense of unity in the place that we call “home.” As day-to-day life becomes increasingly digital and experiences become increasingly “remote,” discussion about what it takes to build healthy communities becomes more and more important. We are proud to sponsor the Strong Roots Scholarship and Essay Contest as a way to promote discussion about the meaning of community in the digital age and as a way to sponsor educational opportunities for individuals who are dedicated to building strong communities where passions and careers can take root. This essay contest and the associated $500 scholarship is open to individuals throughout the country who are enrolled in any accredited post-secondary institution during the school year.*

Alan Bowman's Sack the Stigma Scholarship

As an athlete and student, Alan Bowman is no stranger to the stressors and pressure that often come with navigating college and extracurricular responsibilities, and how all of these factors can have a negative impact on student mental health. Mental health is a topic that seems to be overlooked by society today, especially for men and athletes. There's a stigma that all men must be strong and tough not only physically, but also emotionally; we're taught to bottle our emotions and not openly discuss problems that we're going through. Like many other students, I have dealt with mental health issues throughout my college career, and I'm so grateful for the support from the amazing people in my corner. Because of that, I urge you not to walk alone on your journey. I'm here to help break this stigma and prove that sometimes it's okay to not be okay. The more we talk about what we're going through, the easier it becomes to recognize we need help and utilize resources to do just that. I am super excited to be partnering with Access Scholarships to award a $1,000 scholarship to a student who recognizes the importance of speaking up about mental health, and is an advocate in their community for encouraging others to do the same. Together, we can Sack the Stigma! Current high school, college and graduate students of all years are encouraged to apply below.
