Number of Awards & Eligibility: Three awards offered annually.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be a graduate of one of the following East Hawai'i public schools: Hilo, Honoka'a, Kea'au, Laupahoehoe, Pahoa, or Waiakea.
  3. Must be a resident of Hawaii.
  4. Must plan to attend an accredited two- or four-year college or university as a full-time student (12 credits per semester for undergraduate; 9 credit hours per semester for graduate).
  5. Must demonstrate academic achievement with a grade point average of 2.5 or higher.
  6. Must be a U.S. citizen.
  7. Preference is given to students who major in fine arts and classics.
  8. Must be a high school graduate or older to apply for this undergraduate and graduate award.

Description: This scholarship is available for Hawaii undergraduate and graduate students; preference is given to students who are majoring in fine arts or classics. Students must be graduates of one of the following East Hawai'i public schools: Hilo, Honoka'a, Kea'au, Laupahoehoe, Pahoa, or Waiakea.

Additional Information: This scholarship was established for the benefit of high school graduates from East Hawai'i (Honoka’a to Ka‘u). Dr. Gerrit Ludwig was an ophthalmologist in Hilo with a love for fine arts and classics. He set up this fund to support students studying in these fields. Preference is given to students pursuing a degree in Fine Arts and Classics. All applicants for this award must demonstrate financial need and good moral character. Recipients will be notified after the scholarship selection committees meet, which could be any time between May and August.

Award Amount: $14,750 annually, non-renewable. Students may reapply each year.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $44,250.
