Are there Biology Scholarships for College Students?

If you are a biology major, there are a wide variety of scholarships to apply for. Biology and other science scholarships offset the cost of earning a college degree. They are available from national and local providers as well as colleges.

One option you have is to look for science scholarships reserved for STEM majors. These are for science, technology, engineering or math fields.

Another way is to tap the resources for your own discipline. That way, you may find scholarships for the field of study you want to pursue. For instance, horticulture, water resources, animal or marine biology.

Still other scholarships are for minority students and/or women studying science. For example, the Women in STEM Scholarship is granted by MPower Financing. These awards focus on women who will use their STEM degree to benefit society.

Also, a similar award is the Dr. Nancy Foster Scholarship program. It is an annual scholarship program from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

In addition, there are biology scholarships for female and minority students. Students must be pursuing a graduate level degree. Areas include oceanography, marine biology, biological science, natural resource management, or maritime archaeology.

Since there are many providers, criteria to qualify for a biology scholarship varies. Often, the provider wants to specifically see a certain GPA range and financial need. But things such as a list of your honors, awards and leadership skills may also be important.

Why Scholarships for Biology Are Important to Help Pay for College?

Biology is the natural science that studies life and living organisms. Since it is a diverse field of study, it encompasses a wide range of sub areas including:

  • Biochemistry
  • Biomedical Sciences
  • Marine Biology and Oceanography
  • Zoology and Animal Biology
  • Pharmacology
  • Human Genetics
  • Environmental Biology
  • Neurobiology

With so much room to explore one’s interests, biology is one of the most popular college majors. About 1,895,000 people earned bachelor’s degrees in recent years. Of them, 110,000 were in biological and biomedical sciences.

Earning a bachelor’s degree in biology may help you land an entry level role in a few areas. For example, microbiologists, natural science managers and environmental scientists are careers to pursue. Overall it all depends on your career goals.

People in these fields perform research and/or innovate. While some work to find greener sources of energy. Biologists also create new vaccines or work in labs to identify causes of diseases.

In order to afford a biology degree, you should consider applying for a scholarship. According to the NCES, the average total cost of four year public college is $13,900. If you plan to study at a private nonprofit, the average total cost is $27,200 and $23,800 at private for profit schools. So scholarships may help make college more affordable and is a great type of financial aid.
