Number of Awards & Eligibility: A minimum of one award offered annually.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for international and U.S. students.
  2. Must be willing to participate in a fellowship project addressing management, institutions, organization and administration, public policy, and architecture, as well as political, economic, social, and intellectual trends in community association housing.
  3. Must be enrolled in an accredited master's, doctoral, or law program at the time of application.

In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:

Description: This fellowship is available for graduate students who are willing to participate in a fellowship project addressing management, institutions, organization and administration, public policy, or architecture, as well as political, economic, social, and intellectual trends in community association housing.

Application requirements for the Byron Hanke Fellowship are:

  • Recommendation letters (3)
  • Brief writing sample (5 to 20 pages)
Additional Information: All awards will be based on merit, without regard to race, gender, or religion. Minority applicants are encouraged to apply. Fellows are expected to prepare a research project on community associations, which is defined as any association that governs a common-interest community of any kind where homeowners support the association with mandatory financial assessments and are subject to use and aesthetic restrictions. The foundation is especially interested in substantive papers from the social sciences, which place community association housing within political or economic organizational models. No project prepared as part of the Byron Hanke Fellowship shall be eligible for the Foundation for Community Association Research Award of Excellence. Applicants will be notified by July 1.

Award Amount: $2,000 to $4,000 annually, non-renewable. The award will be disbursed in three equal installments: the first when the student receives the fellowship; the second at the beginning of the second academic term after the first payment, upon confirmation of satisfactory progress by his/her academic or project adviser; and the third upon completion of the project.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $3,000.
