Number of Awards & Eligibility: Up to three awards offered annually.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for international and U.S. students.
  2. Must be enrolled or plan to enroll as a full-time student.
  3. Must have been diagnosed with a moderate to profound hearing loss prior to age seven (the language-learning years). The hearing loss must be bilateral and in the moderate to profound range. Applicants must have an unaided Pure-Tone Average (PTA) of 60dB or greater in the better hearing ear in the speech frequencies of 500, 1000 and 2000 Hz. Individuals with cochlear implants meet this eligibility requirement. Unilateral (one-sided) hearing loss does not qualify. A formula for calculating the PTA is available on the application.
  4. Must be accepted to or currently enrolled in an accredited law school or master's/doctoral program in public policy or public adminstration.
  5. Must be accepted to or currently enrolled in an eligible graduate program for his/her first, second, or third year of study.

Description: Graduate students enrolled in a law or public policy program are eligible for this award. The applicant must have a hearing loss that was diagnosed prior to age seven, is bilateral, and in the moderate to profound range.

Additional Information: In the weeks after the application deadline, all applications are screened for eligibility. Eligible applications are then forwarded to the award selection committee for review. Ineligible applications will be discarded. Once the screening process is complete, applicants will be notified via email of the status of their applications - either the application is not eligible, or the application is being reviewed by the award selection committee. Applicants will also receive information about when they can expect to receive information about the award decisions. Applicants not selected to receive an award will be notified by email only. Applicants selected to receive an award will be notified by email and will also receive a follow up letter with the award check. Applicants must use spoken communication as their primary mode of communication. Financial need is considered in awarding this scholarship.

Award Amount: $5,000 annually, non-renewable. A recipient who has enrolled in nine or more credit hours is eligible to reapply in his/her second and/or third year of study.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $5,000.
