Number of Awards & Eligibility: Three awards offered annually.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must intend to make music performance or teaching a central part of his/her future life.
  3. Must play an instrument. Any of the usual instruments of a band or orchestra are eligible for the instrumental competition, except those whose sound is electronically produced or amplified. Strings, woodwinds, brass, piano and percussion are all welcome.
  4. Must enroll full time at an accredited college or university.
  5. Must be a U.S. citizen.
  6. Must be a graduating high school senior or a current freshman in college at time of application. Those who have entered as high school seniors are eligible to compete again as college freshmen, unless they have been previous first-place winners.

Application requirements for the Glenn Miller Instrumental Scholarship are:

  • Personal statement
  • Audition CD or tape
Additional Information: Any of the usual instruments of band or orchestra are eligible for the instrumental competition, EXCEPT those whose sound is electronically produced or amplified. Strings, woodwinds, brass, piano and percussion are all welcome. Notice of acceptance or non-acceptance will be provided within a reasonable time following the screening process. Not more than 10 finalists will be accepted in each category. Each finalist will have to come to Clarinda at his/her own expense for the annual Glenn Miller Festival. Finalists must be prepared to do the following: perform a work of concert or competition quality of about five minutes duration, or a movement of a major work; sight read selections of the judge's choice; and perform technical exercises such as arpeggios, scales, rudiments and transposition, to the extent required by the judge. Finalists are recommended to perform a selection contrasting in style or type to the required piece, or to demonstrate their skills in improvising.

Award Amount: Awards will be given in the following amounts: $3,000, $2,000 and $1,000. All awards are offered annually and are non-renewable.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $12,000.
