Number of Awards & Eligibility: One award offered annually.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be 18 years of age or older to apply for this undergraduate and graduate award.
  3. Must be a U.S. citizen or legal resident.
  4. Must have a strong interest in writing poetry and not yet have published a full-length book of poetry.

In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:

Description: U.S. citizens/legal residents who are 18 years of age or older are eligible to enter this poetry contest for publication of a book-length collection of poems. Entrants must have not yet published a full-length book of poetry at the time of entry.

Application requirements for the A. Poulin, Jr. Poetry Prize are:

  • $25 entry fee
  • Poetry manuscript
Additional Information: The A. Poulin, Jr. Poetry Prize is awarded to honor a poet's first book, while also honoring the late founder of BOA Editions, Ltd., a not-for-profit publishing house of poetry and poetry in translation. The manuscript may be submitted elsewhere simultaneously, but the author must notify BOA Editions immediately if it is accepted by another publisher. Individual poems from the manuscript may have been published previously in magazines, journals, anthologies, chapbooks of 32 pages or less, or self-published books of 46 pages or less, but must be submitted in manuscript form. Published books in other genres do not disqualify contestants from entering the contest. The winner will be announced in spring following the application deadline. For notification of competition results, the applicant should include an SASE with his/her entry packet. The winning manuscript will be published in an original paperback edition in the A. Poulin, Jr. New Poets of America Series. The winner will retain full copyright of his/her work. Employees, volunteers, and board members of BOA Editions, Ltd., their partners or spouses, their immediate families, or immediate family members of the judge are not eligible to enter.

Award Amount: $1,000 annually, non-renewable. This honorarium will be awarded within two weeks of a signed contract between the winner and BOA Editions. The winning author will also have his/her book published by BOA Editions, Ltd., and will be offered a standard book contract which will include a royalty rate.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $1,000.
