Number of Awards & Eligibility: Ten cash awards offered annually. There will also be fifteen non-cash awards offered annually.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for international and U.S. students.
  2. Must have an interest in writing short stories.

Description: This award is a writing contest available to any student who submits a short story of 1,500 words or less and the $30 entry fee. Multiple submissions are accepted, but the entry fee must be included with each submitted work.

Application requirements for the Writer’s Digest Annual Writing Competition are:

  • Manuscript
  • Entry form
  • $30 entry fee
Additional Information: Winners will be notified by Feb. 14. Winners' names will appear in the May/June issue of Writer's Digest magazine. Afterwards, their names and story titles will be posted at www.writersdigest.com. The following people are not permitted to enter the competition: employees of F&W Publications, Inc., and their immediate families, and Writer's Digest contributing editors and correspondents as listed on the masthead.

Award Amount: One grand prize award of $5,000, one first-place award of $1,000, one second-place award of $500, and third- through tenth-place awards of $25 to $250 each. All awards are offered annually and are non-renewable. Those winners placing 11th through 25th will receive a $50 gift certificate for Writer's Digest books.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $570.
