Number of Awards & Eligibility: 50 awards offered annually.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must demonstrate academic achievement with a grade point average of 2.0 or higher.
  3. Must be a U.S. citizen.
  4. Must demonstrate critical financial need. ($55,000 or less adjusted gross income per family is preferred; a written explanation must be provided if income is higher.)
  5. Must attend high school in Nebraska or in an eligible county in Iowa.
  6. Must be a resident of Nebraska OR a resident of an eligible county in western Iowa. A complete list of counties may be found on the sponsor's website.
  7. Must be enrolled full time as a high school senior, progressing normally toward graduation, and planning to enter college no later than the fall semester following graduation.

Additional Information: The Horatio Alger Ak-Sar-Ben Scholarship Program provides financial assistance to students in the state of Nebraska and western Iowa who have exhibited integrity and perseverance in overcoming personal adversity and who aspire to pursue higher education. The Ak-Sar-Ben Scholarship Program is funded through the generosity of the Knights of Ak-Sar-Ben Foundation. The applicant must have a strong commitment to pursue a bachelor's degree at an accredited institution. The student may begin his/her studies at a two-year institution and then transfer to a four-year institution. The applicant must also plan to enter college no later than the fall following high school graduation. Each applicant must demonstrate involvement in co-curricular and community activities. The applicant must be a resident of Nebraska or western Iowa in the counties of Adair, Adams, Audubon, Buena Vista, Calhoun, Carroll, Cass, Cherokee, Clay, Crawford, Dickinson, Fremont, Greene, Guthrie, Harrison, Ida, Lyon, Mills, Monona, Montgomery, O'Brien, Osceola, Page, Pottawattamie, Plymouth, Ringold, Sac, Shelby, Sioux, Taylor, Union, or Woodbury.

Award Amount: The total value of this award is $6,000 paid out in equal installments annually. If the student receives this award he/she is guaranteed the funding for the full five years by maintaining a grade point average of 2.0 or higher. This award is non-renewable.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $60,000.
