Number of Awards & Eligibility: Eight awards offered annually.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. Must have a grade point average of 2.0 or higher.
  2. Must be a U.S. citizen or legal permanent resident.
  3. This award is for U.S. students.
  4. Must be a high school senior at the time of application.
  5. Must be a resident of South Carolina.

Description: This scholarship is available for high school seniors in South Carolina who have unmet financial need and a grade point average of 2.0 or higher.

Application requirements for the Horatio Alger South Carolina Scholarship are:

  • Family tax returns
Additional Information: The Horatio Alger South Carolina Scholarship Program provides financial assistance to students in the State of South Carolina who have exhibited integrity and perseverance in overcoming personal adversity and who aspire to pursue higher education. The award is funded through the Horatio Alger Foundation. The applicant must have a strong commitment to pursue a bachelor's degree at an accredited institution. The student may begin his/her studies at a two-year institution and then transfer to a four-year institution. The applicant must also plan to enter college no later than the fall following high school graduation. Each applicant must demonstrate involvement in co-curricular and community activities. Scholarship recipients will be announced in January.

Award Amount: The total value of this award is $10,000 paid out in installments annually. If the student receives this award he/she is guaranteed the funding for the full 5 years of his/her undergraduate program by maintaining a grade point average of 2.0 or higher.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $10,000.
