Number of Awards & Eligibility: One award.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. Must have past or present participation in a junior lifeguard program or past or present employment as an open water lifeguard (river, lake, ocean). Pool lifeguards and/or certification are not considered.
  2. Must be a full-time student attending an a four-year post-secondary school during the 2020-2021 academic year.
  3. Must be a current high school senior or undergraduate student.
  4. Must demonstrate a strong work ethic, independence, academic rigor and promise, athleticism, and service to the community.
  5. Must have a minimum unweighted 3.2 GPA as High School student.
  6. Must have a minimum 3.0 GPA as undergraduate student.

Description: The Ben Carlson foundation offers two $10,000 scholarships to honor his sustainable legacy of ocean safety, and philanthropy. Eligible applicants should be high school seniors or undergraduate students who demonstrate a strong work ethic, independence, academic rigor and promise, athleticism, and service to the community.

Additional Information: Ben Carlson was a Newport Beach Lifeguard that died in the line of duty July 6, 2014. He exhibited an exceptional work ethic, love of the ocean, compassion, athleticism, and scholastic performance. The Ben Carlson Memorial and Scholarship Foundation offers two $10,000 scholarship in Ben’s memory and in so doing create a sustainable legacy of Ben Carlson through scholarship, ocean safety, and philanthropy.

Award Amount: The winner of the Ben Carlson Scholarship will receive $10,000.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $10,000.
