Number of Awards & Eligibility: Two national awards, as well as a scholarship for each state representative of the 19 participating state chapters.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident alien.
  3. Must be at least 15 years of age and not older than 20 at time of application.
  4. Must be a graduating high school senior who will receive a diploma from an accredited high school located within the state where he/she applies. The student must be accepted for admission to an accredited college/university, and plan to matriculate at a college in the following academic year.
  5. Must have a father, mother, or natural guardian who is a full-time, active, paid member of a police, sheriff's, or fire department in the state where the student applies. Volunteer fire department members are also eligible.

Description: This scholarship is available for U.S. high school seniors who have a parent/guardian who is a full-time, active employee of a police, sheriff's, or fire department. The student must be 15 to 20 years of age.

Additional Information: ESA and participating Charted Chapter Associations are involved in the scholarship program. The first place winner of each state's program is automatically considered for the national ESA Youth Scholarship Program awards. Students who reside in a participating state must enter their state-level scholarship program to be considered for national awards. Students who reside in a state without an ESA chapter or in a non-participating state should submit their applications directly to ESA. ESA will select one of these students as the national nominee to compete with the state winners. Awards are based on a combination of academic achievement, national test scores, extracurricular participation and the essay. All decisions are final. The score is based on the following: grade point average, 25 points; SAT or ACT scores, 30 points; essay, 25 points; academic prizes, awards, hobbies, school and outside extracurricular activities, 20 points. Please note: Children of the following types of employees do not qualify for this program: administrative staff of a police/fire department; DHS, FBI and other federal employees; and reserve officers, part-time sheriff's deputies and retired, deceased or disabled employees.

Award Amount: The national winner will receive a scholarship of $7,500. Second place will receive $2,500.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $10,000.
