Number of Awards & Eligibility: The number of awards offered annually is at the discretion of the DCF Board of Directors.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be a U.S. citizen or eligible non-citizen.
  3. Must be a resident of Delaware.
  4. Must be active in community service.
  5. Must enroll as an undergraduate student in the fall of the year in which the scholarship is awarded.
  6. Must enroll full time.
  7. Must have experienced a health-related issue, not necessarily a chronic illness, documented by a physician, which lasted at least six months and impaired the individual's ability to pursue his/her education.

In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:

Description: This scholarship is open to Delaware residents who have experienced a health-related issue (not necessarily a chronic illness) documented by a physician, which lasted at least six months and impaired their ability to pursue their education. Graduating high school seniors and former graduates from Delaware high schools may apply.

Application requirements for the Achievement Scholarship for Students with a History of Chronic Illness are:

  • Application form
  • Official Transcript
  • FAFSA
  • Test scores (HS sr. only)
  • Tax return
  • Proof of eligibility
  • Essays (2)
  • Recommendation letter
  • Personal statement
Additional Information: To ensure complete impartiality in selection of recipients and to maintain a high level of professionalism, DCF programs are administered by AcademicWorks, a firm that specializes in managing sponsored scholarship programs. Preference will be given to those enrolled in the First State School or any of its branches prior to or at the time the health-related issue occurred. All students must have a low to moderate income. An independent selection committee will evaluate the applications and select the recipients considering: extracurricular activities; community involvement; essay content; academic achievements and records; financial need (optional). Decisions of the selection committees are final and are not subject to appeal. No application feedback will be given. Notifications are sent to recipients and applicants not selected to receive an award via email by the end of June.

Award Amount: The amount of each award is at the discretion of the DCF Board of Directors. Awards are non-renewable. Past awardees are eligible to re-apply.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $4,000.
