Number of Awards & Eligibility: Approximately 2,500 awards offered annually.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be a U.S. citizen.
  3. Must be a current undergraduate student.
  4. Must be receiving a federal Pell Grant or be able to provide proof that he/she will be receiving a Pell Grant at the time of application or during the term of his/her study abroad program or internship.

In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:

Description: This scholarship is available for U.S. undergraduate students who plan to study or intern abroad in the same country for at least four weeks; the country cannot be Cuba or on the U.S. State Department's Travel Warning list. Students must be receiving or will receive a federal Pell Grant.

Additional Information: The applicant must be applying to or have been accepted into a study abroad program or internship eligible for credit by the student's accredited institution of higher education in the U.S. The applicant must be studying or interning abroad for at least four weeks in one country. Programs going to more than one country are eligible if the student will be in one country for at least four consecutive weeks. The applicant may be studying or interning abroad in any country except a country on the U.S. Department of State's current Travel Warning list. The Gilman Scholarship Program aims to support students who have been traditionally underrepresented in education abroad, including but not limited to, students with high financial need, community college students, students in underrepresented fields such as the sciences and engineering, students with diverse ethnic backgrounds, and students with disabilities. The program seeks to assist students from a diverse range of public and private institutions from all 50 states, Washington, D.C. and Puerto Rico. Please note: Students who apply for and receive the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship to study abroad are then eligible to receive an additional scholarship through the Critical Need Language Award. Applicants who are studying a critical need language while abroad in a country in which the language is predominantly spoken will automatically be considered for the Critical Need Language Award. Award Amount: Up to $5,000 annually, non-renewable. The average award is $4,000. Recipients must use the award to defray eligible study or intern abroad costs. These costs include program tuition, room and board, books, local transportation, insurance and international airfare. Gilman Scholarship recipients can only receive the scholarship once. If a student previously declined the Gilman Scholarship, he/she is welcome to re-apply, as long as he/she still meets all eligibility requirements.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $4,000.
