Does the Military Help Pay for Medical School?
Joining the armed forces may help you graduate from medical school debt free. The Health Professions Scholarship (HPSP) is from the U.S. Army. Other branches such as the Navy and Air Force also offer this scholarship for medical school with different rules.
HPSP covers full tuition for any accredited medical program, plus a generous monthly stipend of more than $2,400. There’s also a sign on bonus of $20,000 and an allowance for books. Eligible applicants must be U.S. citizens and hold a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college. When you graduate, you must commit to active duty as a commissioned officer. The Leslie Andree Hanna Medical Scholarship is a one-time preferred amount of $5,000 to a deserving female student who is a US citizen attending medical school. U.S. students who reside in the Portage, Wisconsin area and are second-year medical school students are eligible for this award. Students must plan to specialize in pulmonary medicine or in general family practice.
This scholarship is available for California students who are pursuing a certificate/associate’s, baccalaureate, or graduate degree in dental hygiene, or a degree completion or alternative practice program. Students must have a grade point average of 3.5 or higher, and be student or professional members of the American Dental Hygienists’ Association (ADHA).
This scholarship is available for Jewish graduate students who immigrated to the United States through the assistance of HIAS Chicago and/or applied for permanent residency or citizenship with the assistance of HIAS Chicago between Jan. 1, 2000- present. The student must be enrolled in professional study in one of the helping professions.
