Number of Awards & Eligibility: Up to 10 awards offered annually.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for international and U.S. students.
  2. Must be enrolled in an accredited graduate program in the United States or Canada.
  3. Must be a Ph.D. or Th.D. student who is currently in his/her first or second year of doctoral study.
  4. Must have a commitment to the Christian church and theological education.
  5. Must be studying in a field with the potential to strengthen the religious life of North American Christians and their institutions while simultaneously advancing American religious and theological scholarship. Applicants may represent a variety of academic disciplines, including, but not limited to, history, ethics, the social sciences, biblical studies, and historical, systematic, and practical theology.

In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:

Description: This fellowship is open to U.S. and Canadian Ph.D. or Th.D. students currently in their first or second year of doctoral study. Eligible proposals should describe the applicant's commitment to the Christian church and theological education and suggest how his/her doctoral work would be an appropriate preparation of a career in theological school teaching.

Additional Information: The Doctoral Fellowship program invites Ph.D. or Th.D. students to consider theological education as their vocation. In all its grantmaking, including the Doctoral Fellowship program, The Louisville Institute is interested in funding persons and projects with the potential to strengthen the religious life of North American Christians and their institutions while simultaneously advancing American religious and theological scholarship. Applicants may not submit applications to more than one Louisville Institute grant or fellowship program within the same grant year (June 1-May 31). Louisville Institute grants and fellowships cannot be awarded to members of the Louisville Presbyterian Seminary Board, faculty, administration, staff, or student body, or to any of their immediate family members (parents, spouse, or children). Institute Board members themselves and members of their immediate families are ineligible to receive Louisville Institute grants or fellowships.

Award Amount: $2,000 annually, renewable for one additional year. In both years of their award, Doctoral Fellows are expected to participate in a colloquium which will meet three times (October, February, and June) during each fellowship year. Travel and lodging expenses for the colloquium will be covered by The Louisville Institute.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $4,000.
