In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must enroll full time at an accredited college or university.
  3. Must have a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or higher.
  4. Must attend or have graduated from a high school located in San Mateo County or Santa Clara County.
  5. Must demonstrate community involvement over a period of several years.
  6. Must be a U.S. citizen.
  7. Must be a resident of California.
  8. Must be a graduating high school senior or older to apply for this undergraduate and graduate award.

Description: This award is available for U.S. undergraduate and/or graduate students who have graduated from a high school located in San Mateo County or Santa Clara County and are residents of California. Students have a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or higher and demonstrate community involvement over a period of several years.

Additional Information: This program was established through the trust of Mrs. Hazel Reed, a longtime resident of Burlingame. The purpose of this scholarship is to support high school graduates of high academic achievement who would be unable to pursue higher education without financial assistance. The selection committee looks for academic promise, documented perseverance in activities outside the classroom, the quality of the personal statement and personal characteristics such as honesty, good judgment and community service. Applicants must also demonstrate financial need. Students may apply to both the Crain Educational Grant Program and the Hazel Reed Scholarship Program, but may receive only one of these scholarships.

Award Amount: Up to $5,000 annually, non-renewable.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $5,000.

Applications are available on the Silicon Valley Community Foundation website. In addition to a completed application, the applicant must also submit the following: two letters of recommendation (the letters must be from the people listed on the application); an official transcript of grades; a personal statement addressing the topics listed on the application; evidence of financial need as described on the application; and proof of U.S. citizenship (photocopy of birth certificate, passport or naturalization papers). The complete application packet must be completed online by the deadline date.
