Number of Awards & Eligibility: There is no set limit on the number of scholarships to be given under this program. Awards are provided based on the number of eligible students.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be a resident of Maine's year-round unbridged island communities. Those islands are as follows: Chebeague, Cliff, Frenchboro, Great Cranberry, Isle au Haut, Islesboro, Islesford, Long, Matinicus, Monhegan, North Haven, Peaks, Swan's and Vinalhaven.
  3. Must be a U.S. citizen.
  4. Must be a high school senior or current undergraduate student at the time of application.

In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:

Description: This scholarship is available for undergraduate students who are residents of Maine's year-round unbridged island communities. Those islands are as follows: Chebeague, Cliff, Frenchboro, Great Cranberry, Isle au Haut, Islesboro, Islesford, Long, Matinicus, Monhegan, North Haven, Peaks, Swan's and Vinalhaven.

Application requirements for the Maine Island Higher Education Scholarship are:

  • Application form
  • Recommendation letters (2)
  • Personal statement
  • Official Transcript
  • Photo
Additional Information: Award decisions will be based on academic achievement, employment and extracurricular activities, the personal statement, and special circumstances. The Island Institute reserves the right to determine how best to balance these criteria when evaluating applications. Students applying under this award program may be considered for any of the following named awards: the Louis W. Cabot Academic and Community Leadership Scholarship; the S. Parkman Shaw Scholarship; the Sweet Scholarship; Otter Island Fund; and the Seth Jordan Memorial Fund Scholarship. Award winners will be notified by May 31.

Award Amount: $250 to $5,000 annually, non-renewable. Students may reapply each year.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $2,625.
