Number of Awards & Eligibility: Approximately 200 awards offered annually. Awards are contingent upon continued funding for the program.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must have been enrolled at an accredited Montana high school for three years, including his/her senior year.
  3. Must have a cumulative grade point average of 3.4 or higher at the end of the seventh semester in high school. The student must also have met the Board of Regents Admission Policy (mus.edu/borpol/bor300/301-1.pdf) and Rigorous Core Requirements and Classes (www.mus.edu/che/arsa/CollegePrep/hscpindex.asp). Students have until the date of high school graduation to complete this requirement.
  4. Must plan to attend one of the following eligible Montana campuses: Dawson Community College; Flathead Community College; Miles Community College; MSU-Bozeman; MSU-Billings; City College MSU; MSU-Northern; Great Falls College MSU; UM-Missoula; Missoula College UM; UM-Western; Helena College UM; Montana Tech; Highlands College of Montana Tech.
  5. Must be a U.S. citizen.
  6. Must be a Montana resident.
  7. Must be a high school senior at time of application.

In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:

Description: This scholarship is available for Montana resident high school seniors who are planning to enroll at a Montana University System campus. Applicants must have a grade point average of 3.4 or higher and complete the Rigorous Core Curriculum requirements.

Application requirements for the Montana University System (MUS) Honor Scholarship are:

Additional Information: Students from each high school will be ranked in grade point average order. The individual(s) with the highest grade point average will be awarded 30 points, the next highest grade point average will be given 29, and so forth, until all students with at least a 3.4 grade point average are ranked. Once the grade point average score has been determined, this score will be added to the student's ACT or SAT score, whichever is higher, to create a composite score. (SAT scores are converted to equivalent ACT scores.) The students with the highest composite scores in the state will be offered an MUS Honor Scholarship. Once awards are announced, high school counselors/designees will be notified; in addition, all applicants will be notified by mail. If awarded, each recipient must accept or decline the scholarship. Awards are expected to be announced in mid-April.

Award Amount: The scholarship waives the recipient's tuition when used at an eligible campus. The average value of the scholarship at a four-year Montana campus is $4,000 annually. Please note: The scholarship does not cover mandatory or class fees. Students should ask the college for a list of fees that are not covered by the scholarship. All awards are renewable for up to three additional years. Recipients must meet the following criteria in order to retain the scholarship: utilize the scholarship within nine months after high school graduation; maintain a 3.4 cumulative grade point average each academic year; complete a minimum of 30 credits after two semesters, 60 credit hours after four semesters, and 90 credit hours after six semesters; abide by the student conduct code of the home campus; and remain enrolled continuously each fall/spring semester for the life of the scholarship.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $16,000.

Applications are available from the Montana University System (MUS) website. Please note: In order to be eligible to submit an application, the student must take the ACT and/or SAT by Dec. 31 of his/her senior year, and the student must apply to and be accepted by one of the eligible colleges/universities as early as possible. The student must register an account and complete the scholarship application online on the MUS website. The student must then have his/her high school counselor complete the section of the application to verify that he/she is on track to complete the Rigorous Core Requirement. A complete application packet will include the following materials: a completed application signed by the student and his/her counselor; a high school transcript through the 7th semester that includes cumulative grade point average; proof/certification of the student's ACT/SAT score(s); and a copy of the student's college acceptance letter. All application materials must be submitted online by the deadline date.
