Number of Awards & Eligibility: Three awards offered annually.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for international and U.S. students.
  2. Must be a high school senior OR an undergraduate student currently enrolled in a two-or four-year college, technical school, or university.
  3. Must be 13 years of age or older at time of application.
  4. Must live, work, or attend school in Seattle, Washington. Students who live in Seattle and attend college outside the area are eligible to participate.

Description: This essay contest is open to individuals who are 13 years of age or older and reside, work, or attend school in Seattle, Washington. Applicants must have a Seattle Public Library card and must be enrolled or accepted for enrollment as an undergraduate student.

Application requirements for the Stimson Bullitt Civic Courage Scholarship Competition are:

Additional Information: All applicants must have their own Seattle Public Library card. Information on obtaining a card is available online at the Seattle Public Library website. A panel of qualified, independent judges will evaluate each qualified story submitted and will select the winners on or around May 31. The judges will select the most apt, interesting, and original essay based on the following judging criteria: consistency with the overall theme; most compelling subject; most persuasive essay; and overall content of the essay. The Seattle Public Library Foundation's directors and officers, the Seattle Public Library staff involved in the development and administration of the contest, the SPLF's professional advisors, and immediate families of each are not eligible to win any prizes.

Award Amount: The first-place winner will receive a $5,000 scholarship, and two second-place winners will each receive a $2,500 scholarship. All awards are non-renewable. Each scholarship prize will be paid directly to the accredited postsecondary institution of higher education that the winner is attending during the upcoming school year.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $10,000.
