Number of Awards & Eligibility: 20 awards offered annually.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for international and U.S. students.
  2. Must currently study and/or reside full time in the United States.
  3. Must be 8 to 18 years of age at time of application.
  4. Must be a full-time elementary, middle, or high school student. College students and those who have already graduated from high school may not apply.
  5. Must demonstrate exceptional musical achievement and have strong musical ability. Students must be classical instrumentalists, vocalists, or composers.
  6. Must demonstrate unmet financial need by substantiating a limited family income and insufficient funds to cover the cost of new instruments, music lessons, and/or summer music program tuition and travel expenses. Please note: Ninety percent of past recipients come from families with an annual household adjusted gross income of less than $60,000.
  7. Must demonstrate academic achievement through strong scholastic records indicated by good grades (typically a GPA above 3.0 or mostly As and Bs), academic awards, and strong test scores (if available).

Description: This award is open to students who are 8-18 years of age that reside in the United States and have not yet graduated from high school. Students must demonstrate exceptional musical achievement, unmet financial need, academic achievement, and strength of character.

Additional Information: From the Top individually reviews each application using the following criteria to make scholarship decisions: exceptional musical achievement; unmet financial need; academic achievement; and strength of character (e.g., a combination of drive/determination, initiative, maturity, leadership, an ability to overcome obstacles, and a commitment to giving back to one's community). While all these criteria are important, musical achievement and financial need are given the most attention during the application review process. Recipients will be invited to perform on NPR's "From the Top with Host Christopher O'Riley" broadcast. Recipients will also be able to participate in From the Top's Arts Leadership Orientation. Finally, recipients will have the opportunity to create and implement an Arts Leadership activity. Young Artist Award recipients will be responsible for creating and implementing their activities, but will receive support along the way to ensure successful completion and documentation. Award Amount: Up to $10,000 annually, non-renewable. Funds may be applied to instrument purchase, summer music camp expenses, private lessons, etc.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $10,000.
