Number of Awards & Eligibility: The number of awards offered varies annually. Last year, 10 awards were offered.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. Must be a first-generation college student.
  2. Must be a graduating high school senior at the time of application.
  3. Must be a U.S citizen or permanent resident.
  4. Must be from a low-income household and be likely to be eligible for a Pell Grant.
  5. This award is for U.S students.
  6. Must plan to attend Northeastern University in Massachusetts.
  7. Must attend a college or university in Massachusetts.

Description: This award is available to U.S high school students who are planning to attend Northeastern University, MA. Each applicant must be a first-generation college student who has overcome exceptional odds and who demonstrates the potential to excel academically.

Application requirements for the Northeastern University Torch Scholars Program are:

Additional Information: The Torch Scholars Program is looking for students who meet the following criteria: have persevered despite difficult family situations, cultural barriers, financial challenges, or education environments that were unable to prepare them to compete for admission to a highly selective school such as Northeastern; show leadership through community, school, and service work; have not yet demonstrated academic success at the level of their true potential, though they have taken solid college preparatory course work, and can be successful with the academic and personal support provided by the Torch Program; and represent a diversity of academic majors, racial and ethnic backgrounds, and geographic areas. Finalists will be notified at the end of February and invited to campus for Interview Day in March. Torch Interview Day is a six-hour day that includes an individual interview, a group interview, and a support figure interview. Each Torch finalist must submit three essays about his/her motivation and personal value system. In addition, each finalist will complete a non-cognitive assessment. The assessment provides a systematic review of emotional, interpersonal, experiential, attitudinal, and motivational styles. Finalists also participate in a math assessment and simulated lectures.

Award Amount: Torch Scholars receive full tuition, fees, and room and board as well as significant personal and academic support for eight semesters of study and a seven-week Summer Immersion Program. For the current academic year, the total cost of attendance is approximately $54,360. Fees are approximately $1,092 +room and board is $17,480.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $72,932.
