Number of Awards & Eligibility: Five awards offered annually.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be a descendant of a member in good standing with the Hawai'i Carpenter's Union Local 745, with preference given to descendants of retired members.
  3. Must be a resident of Hawaii.
  4. Must plan to attend an accredited two- or four-year college or university as a full-time student (12 credits per semester for undergraduate; 9 credits per semester for graduate).
  5. Must demonstrate academic achievement with a grade point average of 2.7 or higher.
  6. Must be a U.S. citizen.
  7. Must be a high school senior or older to apply for this undergraduate and graduate award.

Description: This scholarship is available for Hawaii undergraduate and graduate students who are descendants of a member in good standing with the Hawai'i Carpenter's Union Local 745, with preference given to descendants of retired members. Students must have a grade point average of 2.7 or higher.

Additional Information: This scholarship honors the memory of Walter Kupau, former head of the Carpenter's Union. Under Kupau's guidance, Local 745 became the fifth-largest union in the state and took an active role in local community issues, politics and public service. Applicants must demonstrate financial need and good moral character. Recipients will be notified after the scholarship selection committees meet, which could be any time between May and August.

Award Amount: Approximately $1,000 annually, non-renewable. Students may reapply each year.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $5,000.
