Number of Awards & Eligibility: The number of awards offered varies annually. Last year, six scholarships were awarded.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must have been born or have a parent born in the Republic of India.
  3. Must be a U.S. citizen or green card holder.
  4. Must have a cumulative unadjusted grade point average of 3.6 or higher (on a 4.0 scale).
  5. Must have a 2013 'Family Adjusted Gross Income' (AGI) of less than $75,000.
  6. Must be a high school senior who is actively seeking enrollment in a community college or four-year degree program at a college or university in the United States for the current application academic year.
  7. Must be currently living in the United States.

In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:

Description: This award is available for U.S. citizens and legal residents who were born in India or have a parent/grandparent who was born in India. The applicant must be a current high school senior with a grade point average of 3.6 or higher, and his/her annual family income must be less than $75,000.

Application requirements for the Upakar Scholarship are:

Additional Information: Applicants are evaluated on all of the following criteria: academic record; financial need; a well-written essay response, including correct grammar, punctuation, and spelling; and his/her letter of recommendation. Applicants that are awarded scholarships will be notified in August.

Award Amount: The Community College Scholarship provides $500 each year for two years of community college, and then $2,000 each year for two years of college/university. The College Scholarship provides $2,000 each year for four years of college/university.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $6,500.

Applications are available on the Upakar-Indo-American Community Foundation website. In addition to the completed application, the student must submit the following materials: two essays as detailed within the application; an official high school transcript; a copy of his/her official SAT or ACT documentation; proof of U.S. citizenship (see application for details); a letter of recommendation from a teacher or advisor, submitted in a sealed envelope with the recommender's signature across the seal; financial information, including the student's Student Aid Report (SAR), copies of his/her parents' and spouse's, if married, federal income tax returns and W-2 forms; and a completed 'Family Information Section.' The SAR is generated by filing the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid). The FAFSA is available online at www.fafsa.ed.gov, at high school guidance offices, and at college financial aid offices. All applications and supporting materials must be sent in one package to the address provided, postmarked by the deadline date. Any items sent requiring a signature (certified mail or registered mail) will not be accepted.
