Number of Awards & Eligibility: 50 students will be chosen.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be actively involved in high school journalism.
  3. Must plan to pursue a career in journalism.
  4. Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident.
  5. Must be a high school junior at time of application.

Description: The Al Neuharth Free Spirit and Journalism Conference is an engaging, in-depth, five-day summer program for 51 high school journalists (one from each state and the District of Columbia) who “dream, dare and do.” Be the one to represent your state and join students from around the country at an exclusive, free Washington, D.C., journalism experience like no other.

Application requirements for the Al Neuharth Free Spirit Scholarship and Conference Program are:

  • Headshot
Additional Information:

Award Amount: Each chosen applicant will receive up to $1,000 and an all expense paid trip to Washington D.C.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $51,000.
