Number of Awards & Eligibility: Five awards offered annually for this program and the Northrop Grumman Foundation Scholarship for Sophomores & Juniors.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be a U.S. citizen.
  3. Must be an incoming or current college freshman.
  4. Must be a female.
  5. Must enroll full time.
  6. Must major in computer engineering, computer science, electrical engineering, software engineering, or systems engineering.
  7. Must attend or plan to attend one of the following schools: Alabama A & M University, Auburn University, California Institute of Technology, California Polytechnic State University-SLO, California State Polytechnic University-Pomona, California State University-Long Beach, California State University-Northridge, Carnegie Mellon University, Cornell University, Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University-Daytona, Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University, Florida Institute of Technology, George Mason University, Georgia Institute of Technology, Howard University, Johns Hopkins University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Morgan State University, North Carolina A & T State University, North Carolina State University, Northwestern University, Ohio State University, Pennsylvania State University, Prairie View A & M University, Purdue University, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Rice University, Rochester Institute of Technology, Rutgers University, San Diego State University, Stanford University, The University of Texas at Austin, University of Alabama at Huntsville, University of California-Berkeley, University of California-Davis, University of California-Irvine, University of California-Los Angeles, University of California-San Diego, University of California-Santa Barbara, University of Central Florida, University of Colorado-Boulder, University of Colorado-Colorado Springs, University of Florida, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, University of Maryland-Baltimore County, University of Maryland-College Park, University of Michigan-Ann Arbor, University of Pittsburgh, University of Southern California, University of Utah, University of Virginia, University of Wisconsin-Madison, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University.

Description: This scholarship is open to female U.S. incoming and current freshmen who are majoring in computer engineering, computer science, electrical engineering, software engineering, and systems engineering. Students must attend eligible schools as listed on the SWE website.

Application requirements for the Northrop Grumman Foundation Scholarship for Freshmen are:

  • Application form

  • Acceptance letter
  • Resume
  • Recommendation letters (2)
Additional Information: Applicants may not be current recipients of a renewable SWE scholarship or receiving full funding for education from another organization (such as members of the armed services attending US military academies and students receiving full reimbursement from an employer). The applicant must enroll or plan to enroll in a program accredited by ABET. Accreditation status for degree programs at specific schools can be found at main.abet.org/aps/Accreditedprogramsearch.aspx.

Award Amount: $5,000 annually, non-renewable.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $25,000.

Applications must be completed online at the Society of Women Engineers (SWE) website between March 1 and May 1. In addition to completing the online application, the student must upload the following documents: current official transcripts from all schools attended; a letter of acceptance to an ABET-accredited college or university; and a resume. The student must also submit email contact information for two letters of recommendation. One letter must be from a teacher or college professor in a STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics) field who is familiar with the student's work. The other letter must be from a person who has known the student for two or more years and who is not a relative or member of the student's family. Recommenders will be sent information regarding submission of their letters; the letters are due approximately one week after the student's application deadline. The online application and all required supporting materials must be submitted by 5 p.m. CT on the deadline date.
