Number of Awards & Eligibility: The number of awards offered varies annually based on the number of qualified applicants and available funding.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be a U.S. citizen or an eligible non-citizen.
  3. Must have an unweighted cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher.
  4. Must enroll each academic term for 12 or more credit hours for undergraduate study or 9 or more credit hours for graduate study.
  5. Must be a resident of Florida.
  6. Must attend a participating Florida college or university. A list of participating institutions is available online at www.floridastudentfinancialaidsg.org/home/PostSecondaryInstitutions.asp.
  7. Must be of Spanish culture, born in or having a natural parent who was born in either Mexico or Spain, or a Hispanic country of the Caribbean, Central or South America, regardless of race.
  8. Must apply during his/her senior year of high school if intending to use the award for undergraduate study OR be a prospective graduate student. Please note: Graduate students are last priority for funding.

Description: This award is available to Florida high school seniors and incoming graduate students who are of Hispanic descent and enroll at a participating Florida institution. Students must have an unweighted cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher.

Additional Information: The José Martí Scholarship Challenge Grant Fund is a need-based merit scholarship that provides financial assistance to eligible students of Hispanic origin who will attend Florida public or eligible private institutions. Eligible students must demonstrate financial need of $2,000 or more. Financial need is determined based on information provided on the FAFSA. Students cannot owe a repayment or be in default under any state or federal grant, loan, or scholarship program unless satisfactory arrangements to repay have been made. Applicants are ranked first by the highest financial need, then by grade point average, and then by application submission date. Applicants will be evaluated and notified approximately at the end of June for eligibility determination. First priority in the distribution of awards shall be given to eligible renewal applicants. Second priority for awards will be given to initial applicants. Third priority for awards will be given to reinstatement applicants. Fourth priority for awards will be given to restoration applicants. Fifth priority for awards will be given to initial graduate applicants.

Award Amount: Up to $2,000 annually. Awards are automatically renewable. Undergraduate students may renew for a maximum of eight semesters (twelve quarters) over a period of no more than six consecutive years, or until receipt of a baccalaureate degree, whichever occurs first (or ten semesters or fifteen quarters for students in five-year programs). Graduate students may renew for a maximum of four semesters or six quarters. In order to renew, students must have earned a grade point average of 3.0 or higher, continue to be enrolled full time, and continue to demonstrate $2,000 or more in financial need.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $1,903.
