Did you know that August 16 is National Tell a Joke Day? It seems like the perfect opportunity to share a good laugh with a friend or spread a smile to someone who may be having a rough day. My kids seem to come up with the corniest jokes, and although many are not that amusing, watching them deliver the punch line is always entertaining. Even when I am in a horrible mood, it is literally impossible not to laugh when something is truly hilarious.
Of course, there have been times when I was the butt (literally!) of the joke and didn’t find anything amusing about it at the time. My high school years are filled with moments I wish I could erase. To this day, I refuse to admit that I was the mummy who lost her bandages during the homecoming skit and had to run across the gymnasium floor with just a mask and bright purple undergarments.
And I’ll never forget falling off the stage into the orchestra pit during Oklahoma! It wouldn’t have been so bad, except for the fact that I landed on one of the cutest boys in school. I spent the final months of my junior year trying to avoid him in the halls whenever possible. Life is full of these unexpected and embarrassing moments, and while most of us would prefer to forget about them, there’s actually a scholarship program that will reward you for sharing your funniest or most mortifying memories. It’s called the Make Me Laugh Scholarship and any U.S. student, 13 years or older, can apply. Here’s the best part, you don’t even need to submit something that happened to you personally. If you witnessed someone else’s embarrassing moment or something hilarious that had you laughing out loud, share it and you might walk away with $1,500 for college. Who knows? You could be laughing all the way to the bank! Just don’t wait too long to submit your entry, as this program ends on August 31.
