I think the school is in the medium of big and small,it is slightly awkward. It is small with Greek life(which you have to be involved in if you want to have a social life) yet it is too big to have the people who aren't in greek life around. These people are usually very liberal and "off" here at Elon. It is great academically, but too focused on group projects.

Elon prides itself on its academics, its staff, and its size. Elon is not too big, but not too small. The average class size at Elon is less than it was at my high school - all of my professors know me by name and make a huge effort to get to know me personally. Elon stresses engaged learning, which means that the students actively participate in their learning. Class time is used more efficiently because it isn't just all of us sitting in front of a professor lecturing. I am yet to have a professor who does not go out of his/her way to help me to succeed. Elon has resources on campus for whatever you may need help with - just within my first year I have gotten to know the people at the Career Center, the Service Learning center, and the Study Abroad center, all of whom have been very helpful. There is definitely school pride at Elon, although you don't come to Elon for the sports. You come to Elon for the atmosphere of students who truly want to learn, be involved in the communities, participate in undergraduate research, internships, service learning, and study abroad.

Elon is a great school to go to. If you want teachers that are engaged and work with you as a student, this is the place to go. If you like to volunteer and get new experiences daily then this school will offer you with plenty of oppurtunities to do this. We have important people visit our school all the time, and there are plenty of oppurtunities to volunteer and become involved in the community.

Elon is too big for its britches. For a school with a top notch MBA program, we arent very good at this money management thing. It is spending money like crazy trying to expand, but has neglected to use any of that energy and money to make it easier for us (students). The big donations go to the money making sports (basketball and football, neither of which is very good) and to build more and more brick buildings with people's names on them. Our endowment is tiny and our financial aid is among the worst in the state. We are trying to become like Duke or Wake Forest in reputation, but it is laughable when the maximum academic scholarship is less than half of tuition alone, never mind room, board, and fees. But Elon has a mask of artificiality trying to convince the students and the world that Elon is going to be recognized as one of the best schools in America someday very soon. Elon, with it's million dollar fountain, brick and columned buildings, and its campus, ie registered botanical garden.

Elon is a fairly large campus...what you walk through campus (which takes about 10 minutes) you will see faces that you know but many that you don't. In the beginning of the experience you will meet tons of people, but as you go through the classes you will end of taking classes with a group of about 10 friends. Its really nice to have people you know and like around you all the time.
The town of Elon is really small and it is sometimes a little difficult to find things to do. But in the last 2 years there has been a huge mall constructed just down the road so it is much better now. Its nice because the grocery store, shopping, movies are really close to the campus which helps out when gas is 3.55 a gallon.
Administration is absolutely wonderful (note I do not work for the school). We have this thing called college coffee where the whole admin comes out to talk to the students. If there is something that could be better or theres a problem they will take care of it. They also have no compunction about throwing money into student events. Dr. Lambert (President) is also one of the nicest people in the world. He really keeps the place running (0 tollerance policy for broken stuff).
School pride (and sports in general) are still weak. We are in SOCON division 1...I think. Its not like there is no spirit, but there's not nearly as much as you might find at UNC or Maryland. They school colors to sports game...we wear polo shirts and sundresses. But there is actually a new pep group on campus so I think that is starting to change. The football team is also getting alot better. My freshman year was a shambles.

The best thing about Elon is its gorgeous campus. I also love the small class size. I never feel like just a number here. I can't imagine going to a big school with hundreds of students in my classes. At Elon, my biggest class was 60 people, and that is rare! When I tell people I go to Elon, most people used to respond "Where?" and I'd have to explain that it's a small, private school near Greensboro, NC. However, more and more people are hearing about Elon. It's reputation as a great school is growing and now it seems like everyone I talk to know someone who went to Elon or has heard something about it recently. Elon has a huge study abroad program and the campus is very active in service learning. The Business, Communications, and Education schools are growing and offer some of the best programs in the country where students get a lot of experience from the start.

Elon is the perfect size. It's small enough that you never feel alone when walking across campus. There is always someone to say hi to or a professor who will ask how you are doing. Gossip is rampant, with students knowing everything about everybody, even if they have never met the person. You almost have to catch your tongue when meeting somebody "new," because you've already heard that person's life story and what they did Friday night. Circles of friends all overlap. However, Elon is big enough that you do have the opportunity to meet new groups of people and discover new campus offerings. Every day I love Elon more.

Elon is the PERFECT size. 5000. For me coming from a tiny high school I thought it would be too big, but in reality a school much smaller would have just been boring. Everyone is super friendly, including professors. Expect to be challenged, but your professors are always there t help you for the most part. Its pretty much the most amazing university anywhere...

just the right size, people from outside of nc dont really know of elon. spend most of my time on campus in class, eating, in the gym. very small college town. administration makes some questionable choices. biggest recent controversy is the mystery masturbator.
