What should every freshman at Florida Atlantic University know before they start?

Plan ahead! College seems far away but looking for schools and visiting them before you enter your senior year is really a great way to do things. Also think ahead to the cost of college, you can't get loans with out great credit. Choose a school that has a great balance between location, specialization in the field you want to study and of course great social life.

Find a college that matches your needs, likes and dislikes. Take in consideration size, location, and academics. It can be the best time of your life or the worst.

This school is a lot of fun. It's close to the beach and the classes are small and personal. Most of the teachers want the students to pass and will help them do so. The greek life is small and but very active and a lot of fun. Our sports teams are getting bigger and better. If you're looking for a small school with a big school life style you can come here and not feel overwhelmed. I've enjoyed being here and the night life is great. Small night life in boca and a 20 min drive to down town west palm or Fort lauderdale and 30-45 mins from miami. :)

To the inquiring collegebound individual I'd say know what you want in a university in regards to size, competitiveness, social campus life, class size, and the proximity of the college to places to shop and/or hang out nearby. To the parents I'd say be active in your child's college interests by taking them to college campuses as well as taking the time to learn about how things like financial aid, meal plans, care packages, and residence halls operate; I know these are important issues to you and you don't want any surprises last minute.

Melissa

I would have to say that students need to feel safe and confortable at the campus. The student needs to know what happens if something goes worng. Parent should feel that their kids are safe and getting a good education. Students should be able to talk to their peers and make friends easily. I think these are a few things that students and parents need to know.

When searching for a college don't choose the school because what people may say, choose it for what works best for you as the student. Choose the school that makes you feel life you belong. Also, do research on all the schools that you apply to.

Adrianna

Make sure that you chose a school that accomadates your needs. Don't just pick a school because it is a "party" school or it'll "look good on your resume". If possible, also try to go somewhere where you will know at least 1 person so that the stress isn't too bad. Most of all, have fun because it only gets harder after it's done and over with.

Claudia

Look for the acidemics that you need at a rpice you can afford to pay tobe able to go to school full time and not to work. Trying to work and go to school is so very difficult and I wish Ihad completed my studies at a much younger age then I have.

Lauren

I would visit many schools previous to applying and know all of their standards for acceptance. One should always have a "reach" school but make sure that the majority of the schools you're considering are actual possibilities. Once accepted, GET INVOLVED! Understand that school work is your first priority but without extracurriculars, one won't make any friends and will eventually begin to hate school. Be proud of the college or university that you attend. Wear school colors and go to sports games. Getting involved will only make your college career ten times better.

Finding the right college is not about the college's stats or where your friends decide to go. It's about immediately being drawn the the campus and just enjoying the atmosphere. Travel college campuses and just find one you're comfortable on. To make the most of your experience, do all of your homework immediately as you get it. Then, you have free time to do whatever you'd like and not worry about anything else. Good luck!

Make sure that you pick the right college.

Do not pick a college based on where your friends are going...pick something that offers what you are looking for.

Kathryn

First and foremost, pick an area that you are comfortable with and make it a priority to look for schools that qualify. I love the beach because it helps me to reduce stress, so I only looked at schools that were near a beach. It has greatly minimized my stress level. Equal important is the size of the school you choose. Personally, I wanted a medium size school because I could still go to big sporting events, while maintaining a small school atmosphere. Some students will want a more intimate setting and others will want to be a part of something bigger. Lastly, pick a school that has a strong background in the major you're choosing. Some schools may not offer all the courses necessary to complete your degree. Also, if the school is noted for its work in your field of study, it is more likely to have a better program with more options.

I would recommend to new students and parents to really know what your looking for in a school and take the time to visit the school and get a taste of it before deciding on where to go. Many people are influenced by parents and friends to go to school with them or where they want them to go and quickly find out that they went for the wrong reasons and end up being unhappy. I strongly encourage parents not to push your child so much to going to a school that they want their children to go to. find out what you child wants and encourage them to do so, the best life lessons always come from letting the child to learn and grow from their own decisions. For the students i think that they should really be open to new things but not to the point where they allow it to change who they are and get caught up in it. Try things to know what they are like but always do things in moderation. Everyday decisions can change your life but its the ones that we choose to carry out that ultimately decide our futures.

Plan ahead!!! Do not be rushed to make a decision on the school or major. Please seek the advice of upperclassmen, academic advisors, and people in your selected field. Do not struggle alone, please ask for help from classmates, teachers, and the tutoring lab. Dont not overextend yourself! Start off with a small workload untill you get a feel for college. Be envolved!! Join clubs, meet new people, have fun, but dont lose sight of your academics. Partying is not an everyday thing and good grades are not attainable through drinking and partying. Use RateMyProfessor.com!!!!!!! You will love it, do not choose a class without referring to it and other students first. Ultimately, you make your own path, and your own decisions, think twice about the choices you make. College is an experience, make the best of it, enjoy and as long as your focused and organized, you will be successful.

Visit multiple colleges while classes are being held. Apply to as many colleges as you can, even if you have a favorite you never know what a school might offer you in terms of a school scholarship. Also apply for every single scholarship you can find, there's is no such thing as enough money in college. Lastly remember the purpose of college is to grow as a person, intellectually and socially. Unfortunately there is no degree in partying so keep yourself focused on school work but dont forget to have a good time...Because time flies!

First, I will tell the parents to understand what his/her kid wants to study because sometimes students picked the wrong carreer just to satisfy the parents. Second, that the school offer extra curriculum activities and ouitside activities where the students have the opportunity to know other students and be socially involved. Third, if parents can have the opportunity to go to orientation with their kids to make sure that the University could fit the student's needs. And last but not least, that talk to other students that had attended that university and find out how was their experience in the university.

Lauren

Go for the right financial aid package.

FIND OUT MORE ABOUT THE COLLEGE

Logan

The best thing that parents and students can do to ensure that they have found the right college is to look at what current students, of the school they wish to attend, has to say about the school. They can also call the schools and request a pamplet or booklet explaining about the school and it's location. The way that they should get the best of the college experience is to make the process of finding the right school an enjoyable one. They should try and take a trip to the school and see what it looks like first-hand. Once they get into the school of their choice, they need to try and to get involved in the student life at that school and enjoy the time they spend on and off campus.
