What should every freshman at Florida Atlantic University know before they start?

I have learned a lot during my years in college and have been at a couple different schools. I was first at a large school in a college town, and have now switched to a town which does not revolve around the college. There is a big difference and it makes you focus more on the task at hand. I think the party schools are not necessarily a good thing for students because they turn young adults into binge drinkers. Not only does it devalue the education they are paying for, but it does not prepare them for a work environment. After four years of college at a school where all they have learned is what bar serves the cheapest drinks, or which fraternity has the best parties, it offers no value for a future employer. At a school like FAU most of the students already work full time and go to school after work just to finish their degree. Completing the bachelors only adds value into their lives and does not have consequences some of the other schools may have on students.

My college experience has been very valuable to me. I had always been the quiet shy nerdy girl in high school. However when I started college I found that people would take me as myself which was funny, quirky and loud. During High school I keept it all in not wanting anyone to look at me in some wierd fashion. College has been the most valuable to me in the aspect that I have learned that you can be yourself regardless of what you may think others will think of you because you will find people that do relate and love you for just that, you.

I've learned so much while being away at college. I've learned time management and a lot of responsibility. At first I thought the freedom would be easy to handle, but then i reaslized how much i missed having my mom wake me up early and pushing me to do my work. It took me a while to get myself motivated and not be the average lazy freshman, but now I have my head set straght and i am ready to finish college with nice grades.

So far, my college experience has taught me one major thing about life, which is: Don't live with someone unless it is absolutely necessary. Based on this sole lesson, my college experience has proved its great value. Being here, living with a roommate has reinforced the notion that I never want to depend on anyone financially, nor do I want the misfortune of having to live with someone because I don't have the means to support myself. This living arrangement alone has compelled me to want to finish college that much more with two degrees in an attempt to be more versatile and be more of an asset to corporate America.

My college experience so far has been amazing! I have grown into a woman since high school. Being in college I have made myself an independent woman, which is very hard in this society. I think that being at college with other students I get to see the ways that others live and are less fortunate in the opportunies that I have. I have had the opportunies to work with Deaf and Hard of Hearing students and they push me to work hard in college. I think going to college is an important skill for all people to experience. High school and College are two totally different environments. In College I have learned to disipline myself in my studies.

From my college experience, I have been able to become myself. People accept you for who you are so you don't need to try hard to fit in. Since I have been in this college, I have found organizations in which I can fit in. This means that everyone in those groups share similar traits as me. This way we all can relate on specific topics. Plus the challenge in college is great. I love adventures and challenges. College has helped me discover what I am best at. I went from being very quiet and antisocial to being communicative and outgoing. Now with this diversity I am able to be me and even more. I am willing to take challenges and pushing toward my limits.

College is one of greatest experiences I have had in my entire life. It has opened the doors to new cultures and a diverse group of people. College is an excellent place to discover who you truly are. It is a place where everyone has something in common; they have all made the decision to attend a school in order to enhance their education. College has been a very valuable experience because it allowed me to become comfortable in my own shoes, learn how to balance work, school and a social life. It is truly a priceless experience.

I am thirty-one years old and just started school. This is my first time attending college of any kind and it's all new to me. The thing I have to get used to the most is how fast paced everything is. I'm managing to keep up but that is only because I am attending school full time without working right now. I am hoping to continue with school without having to work so I can manage to keep up with everything. It's tough to be able to use the tutors and other resources if I have to work too so I'm trying to make sure i have enough money to pay for my classes and get to school.

My college experience can be described with one word: RESPONSIBILITY. I have learned how to take care of my own business in order to successfully complete any semester, because at college, unlike high school, your teachers are not behind you to see if you have done your homework or studied for your exam; you have to be on top of everything yourself. Also, during last Spring semester of 2010, I attended school full-time while I was pregnant. I had my baby last may, without having to be able to finish my classes and take my final exams. I always kept communication with each of my teachers, so they knew what I was going through at that time. Therefore, I was able to make-up each final exams during summer time of 2010, and was able to get a grade for each of my classes without being penalized. That, for me, is responsibility. Now, I have a beautiful four-month baby girl and am currently attending FAU full-time. My college experience here at FAU has not only made me more responsible, but it has also made me stronger, not only as a student, but also as a mother.

Out of my college experience, I've gained life. I've conquered textbooks, mingled with classmates, and found interests I never even knew I had. Rock climbing was one of those new-found adventures. The knowledge I've gained, the people I've met, and the things I've done in college have shaped me into the person I am today: strong, confident, and definitely smart. I never could have done any of it without the "college experience". But, college is much more than just an experience, it's a self discovery that I, for one, am glad to attend.

I've learn so much as a college student. One very important thing I learn is a person must apply themeselves to achieve their goals. A key to success in life is hard work. Students must stay on top of their studies, homework, and assignments in order to pass and when life throws bills (tuition), distractions (parties) or work (hours at work) you become confuse on what was the goal. I had it happen to me and it totally brought my dreams and goals to a hault. Once I realized what was going on I asked myself what was more important and I got back on tract. College life is not easy, students often find themeselves having to make difficult decisions on their education. Life will come with difficulties that often takes you off your track but its important to remeber to stop, take a breath, anaylse your goals and get back on the tracks. I'm back on tract and I'm coming full speed.

So far, out of my college experience I have seen the pride that associates itself with higher education. In public school, more often than not the students hate being there and are not proud of where they are. College is the complete opposite. College is a place that allows a young mind to develop and bloom into the person they want to be. This development is what makes college worth attending. I feel that I am going to become a better person during my stay at Florida Atlantic University.

Coming to college has allowed me to grow as a person. I was unsure if I could live away from my family and survive on my own. Florida Atlantic University has welcomed me with open arms. FAU has now become my home, I have met life long friends and I have been introduced to people from all walks of life and they have touched my life forever. I have also learned how to be a viable member of this community. FAU has shown me how to "go green" and also the ways to make a difference in the community through volunteer work. I have also learned lots of things through my degree. I have learned about all the different things you can do with the biology degree. FAU has helped me to prepare for my future career and to b e ready to face the challenges that go along with it.

I am a well-rounded student who finds myself admired by my peers and others around me. As a college student I am always studying appropriately to exceed in my classwork. I have the ability to grasp ideas firmly and quickly. I do this mostly by making sure to have perfect attendance and by reading and outlining the entire chapter. I find it easy to lead others and find them susceptible to my ideas. A background in sales and mangement gives me the attributes desired by many firms. Also, by receiving the Eagle Scout Award highlights my continued loyalty to philantrophy and my community.

I have always been a school finatic, ready to go to a four year university. However, when money got tough i was forced to give up my dream of living to on-campus, free college life and trade it in for a community college. After one semster i was already disappointed, it wasn't up to my speed. I decided from there to enroll at a trade school to get a quicker carreer in order to pay my way through college n as my family counldn't do so. Financially, things are still hard, but my passion for school is still the same. Education can never be traded, sold or stolen like the money needed to get it and this is why a college education is priceless. I want that college education, and that is why college is valuable to me.

Eloise

My college experience provided me with the knowledge and confidence necessary to effectively educate tomorrow's leaders. I believe my college did a phenomenal job with exposing me to an exceptional educational experience.
