What is the stereotype of students at Oklahoma State University-Main Campus? Is this stereotype accurate?

Ryan

The stereotype for students at Oklahoma State University ranges everywhere from your traditional "Frat" kids to the stoners and geeks. Just like every large university, you have a well represented demographic. One thing that is universal is that the students here are nothing but friendly and easy going.

There are two major stereotypes that usually come with Oklahoma State University. 1) We are all aggies or cowboys that are going to farm for the rest of our life. 2) Oklahoma State is a party school. For the first stereotype I will say in confidence it is NOT true. While OSU's College of Ag is very big and influential on campus, Oklahoma State has much more to offer than just a farmhand education. I am majoring in Agribusiness with hopes of someday becoming a lawyer. I would be lying if I said there was nobody attending OSU who wants to become a farmer, but those students are professional people who are more times than not getting a business degree. For the second stereotype, I will say that while not every college student here parties, many do take that route. There is the local concert place called the Tumbleweed. Students from OSU usually go there once a week, on Thursday nights.

I think one stereotype of OSU is 'country' (as in red-necks, hillbillies, and hicks) because we're the Cowboys (Go Pokes!). However, the campus has such a diverse student body, that we really can't be grouped into any stereotype! Just walking to class I encounter students of many races, nationalities, and faiths. Now just because someone is a different color, it would be racist to assume they are of different nations, but trust me, you can tell by the way these students interact with others, and because usually they will speak their native language. Also how do you judge a person's faith just by looking at them? Many students are very open with their religion, and one even *literally* carries it around with him in the form of a life-sized cross. Even though others may see us as uncultured, I challenge anyone to walk on campus and still believe this to be so.

I don't think they're are many stereotypes at our school except for a few. There are of course the frat students who despite the common perception of partying all the time only represent a few of the entire frat students. Secondly, the athletes of the school who are praised in every way as sports is a pretty important subject over here.

There is a stereotype that Greek students are really unintelligent. This stereotype is only true for some of the Greek students. There are unintelligent Greeks; however, I do not believe there are more than there are in any other campus organizations.

Like all schools, i think that there are many stereotypes at Oklahoma State University. There are some Jocks, due to the quality of the sports, who positively present Oklahoma State. Then on the west side of campus you will see a lot of farm and ranch kids, so cowboy boots, and then there are also the "trendy" kids that are associated with the design majors. There are some geeks in the science and math majors, but in every major you will find a group of geeks. Overall, I don't think that one person at Oklahoma State University is just one of these stereotypes or classifications. I think they are blend together and come together to support all the good that this university has to offer to any given individual.

I think people consider my school as the country folk of Oklahoma. Although we have a diverse group of students, we have a very prestigious agricultural program and veterinary school. I think this feeds into the fact that everyone thinks we've all worked on a farm and go two stepping every night. However, with this stereotype, we are also considered the nicest, most polite campus around. Students from all over say that the reason they chose OSU was for the friendly and welcoming atmosphere. It has a small-town, family feel.

Many people think that OSU is an "ag school," that everyone who goes to school here is majoring in agriculture majors. While OSU has a wonderful agriculture program, there are many other outstanding major programs to choose from. For example, you would never think so but OSU has one of the top Interior Design programs in the nation. I never knew of all of the opportunities available at OSU until I started going to school here.
