The University of Texas at Austin Top Questions

What are the most popular student activities/groups?

Charlie

Athletic events are big and important. Not a lot of students leave their dorm doors open, it's not safe. Last weekend I did my homework and laundry. I also went to a meeting and went to a party on thursday night.

Ellen

UT is inundated with student organizations. Drinking is also a huge deal in Austin with 6th street always busy Thursday-Saturday.

Sarah

Greek life is prevalent at UT. They have been a part of UT for so long that it's a tradition to some. I'm involved in Fine Arts Council. Our group was only recently revived within the past three years. As President of Fine Arts Council, I have tried my best to make our org the "go-to" council for the College of Fine Arts. Fortunately, we get alot of support from our administration. You ask, "what can you do on a Saturday night that doesn't involve drinking?" well you can rent a movie, laundry, grocery store, dinner party, Intramural teams, Jashan parties, Israel Block Party, see Bill Clinton speak on the South Mall, go to the Arboretum and shop at Forever 21, go to South Congress, see a concert, go to the Blanton mix party, go to a gallery opening, go to the Creative Research Laboratory on MLK.

Most popular groups- sororities/fraternaties and student council groups. I am involved in A E Phi, Comm Council and NSSHLA. In University Towers, people do leave their doors open. Football games are the most popular athletic events. Most people are drinking on a Saturday night. The dating scene seems to be that students meet at class/parties, start talking, and then start dating.

Laura

Student government and football. I'm involved with TAG, which is an advertising organization that does community service and is involved with the local agencies. No one leaves their doors open. Athletic events and guest speakers are the most popular events. the dating scene is exciting because of all the things to do in Austin. I met my closest friends in classes and in my dorm. Studying. SxSW, ACL, Ghost walk, Back to Texas. People party once or twice a week on average. They are not important. I went to dinner with some friends, studied, and went to a club. karaoke, movies, restaurants, etc. Most things that are fun minus drinking are off campus.

Anne-Marie

Literally all I do is sit in my room alone and play guitar. Not because I have no invites or friends, I do. But I like my guitar better.

Casey

Greek life is pretty prevalent on campus, and many members are involved in other school activities/groups too. Athletics are very popular, and of course every football home game is packed. Game day is a full day of activities starting with tailgating and ending with victory parties. There is a lot do that doesn't involve drinking, like going to a movie or going to a coffee house. Austin is a big city, so there is always something going on. There are fun restaurants and even student-run plays in the theatre department.

Elizabeth

I would say the most popular ones are frat/sorority. I think Texas sports are very popular, I met my closest friends bby my sorority. If i am awake at 2am i am sutdying. On a sat night you could go to the movies, concert, dinner etc.

The football and basketball department are two of the most popular athletic events because these are two programs that are always high in the rankings. A popular organization is the greek life. It is easy to meet a lot people who share common interests with you and it is also a way for these greek organizations to do something for their community. People party a lot on this campus. Its college, that is half the part of being in college.

Olivia

I would highly encourage incoming students to live on campus in the dorms for at least their first year. While it may be more expensive than living off campus, it really is an experience that I think many students enjoy. Athletics, of course, are a core part of what makes UT so special. And even though football and basketball frequently get the spotlight, other teams such as volleyball and women's soccer are highly ranked as well. We have a very active Greek life on campus, but other spirit organizations are also popular. 6th street is where you will find many students partying on the weekends (and sometimes weekdays). With it's two premier music festivals in Austin City Limits and South by Southwest, Austin is known as "the live music capital of the world." You can find both mainstream and indie artists playing in the many music venues in downtown Austin.
