The University of West Florida Top Questions

What should every freshman at The University of West Florida know before they start?

Cortney

I would tell parents to let their children pick the school that they want to go to because if they are attending a college that they do not like, they will hate it. The student will not perform as they should or as they could. I would tell the student searching for a college to look at the activities going on at the school. They should also search for a school that is right for their intended major. They should not base their decision on where their friends are going. College is the best place to make new friends and have a great time getting an education. I would tell the student to get involved in the college community because it will make their college experience a lot more fulfilling.

Consider the college you choose carefully. Think about the area, and talk to many people that go to the school. Don't move somewhere that you don't know anything about. Once you get into college have fun, but remember why you are there.

Go visit the campus. Set up an appointment to meet with the head of whatever program or study field of interest. Get a tour of the facilities. Try the food (just incase). Look over the class lists for your major and make sure they sound interesting to you. Enjoy the school you pick!

Don't let your students put it off, the longer you wait the harder it is to start back up and do a good job. Your education is the best gift you can give yourself. If you have to flip burgers so you can live in a decent place while you're going to school, do it, it's all worth it in the end. Life's too short to put your education on hold.

College is for students. Choose a place that makes you happy, not one that pleases someone else. You will become your own person, find your own way of doing things, and experience new ideas and opinions. Your choice of where to go to college will influence the rest of your life. No one should make the choice for you. Remember that it's okay to ask for help. The faculty and staff will be there to help you, and your fellow students can be great resources. But don't believe everything people say! Doing research on your own will help you make the decision that's best for you. Have fun! College is one of the most amazing things you will ever experience. Never neglect your school work, and do whatever the professor suggests you to do to prepare for class, but don't forget to leave your room! There are so many fun things to do in the world and here's your chance to try them! Most of all, RELAX! You've got four years to figure out what you want from the world. Don't be afraid to change anything!

Don't always go with the first college that interest you. Get started early, take your time, and visit as many colleges as possible to get a feel of the college life.
