University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign Top Questions

We have a wide range of social groups on campus. All are very welcoming but there have been instances where I have felt like certain groups were forcing their views on me. It was extremely uncomfortable. Other than that, most students are very nice and easy to talk to. It makes me feel very welcome here. The funny think about Illinois is that all freshman are so excited about getting away from home and going away to college but once you get here you realize that most of the students are from Chicago and the suburbs just like you. So it's kind of anti-climactic. That shouldn't discourage students though, I have met many students from outside of the country as well. It seems like many of the students' mentality is to be active and participate in some on campus activity. As you walk down the quad it's really easy to notice how many different types of mindsets there are just by reading the sidewalk.

They are pretty normal.

Classmates mainly keep to themselve unless a topic arises that interests them enough to contribute. Once engaged then very friendly.

My classmates are creative and often liberal, and just a little crazy.

In engineering, there is a split of people who take class very seriously (e.g. me) and those who just try to get by, many of which are helpful and willing to work in groups.

Everyone either thinks they are the smartest people ever or the dumbest...engineering makes you feel either way at different times.

My classmates for my major are goal-oriented, but not shy on giving help or advice to other students, which is difficult to come by when the education program to which we apply for is incredibly selective.

Focused, competitive, and academically awared.

Classmates at the University of Illinois are both diverse and friendly. I have met many friends that I will keep for the rest of my life and have been opened up to numerous opertunities through their experiences. A high majority are more than willing to help with homework and are willing to except you into their social circle. The people are such a diverse group that there will always be something for you to do and people for you to enjoy it with.
