University of Maryland-College Park Top Questions

What do you consider the worst thing about University of Maryland-College Park? Why?

Jeff

The worst thing about UMD would probably be the location around College Park. While I always feel safe on campus, off campus at times I feel nervous. And with crime alerts about robberies happening almost monthly, security can sometimes be an issue.

Tanya

The worst thing about UMD is that there are so many students, it is really difficult for the staff to offer individualized attention and punctuality. Since I have not attended yet, I can only comment onthe application process. It has been a bit bumpy, and because of the large mass of students, the faculty is unable to listen to individual problems separately and students get clumped. Being a transfer student, I am recieving a lot of my information last minute and have few options as far as financial aid and housing.

not sure

One of the things that I would like to change about my school is the programs for minorities. As a minority student I just feel like that they can offer us a bit more opportunities and programs that cater to our unique needs.

Lauren

The worst thing is the price of the school. They get you for every little thing, like mandatory fees and food money. I don't really love the diner food; therefore, I would rather not pay 5,000 for it every semester. It's ridiculous. Can't there be an amazing school for less amount of money?

David

The school itself is great and it has a beautiful campus. Unfortunately, when you go off campus, things can get pretty sketchy. College Park is a great school, but it is still in Prince George's County, which is not one of the safest places to be.

Jeffrey

There can be TA's that ruin a class because of how they teach and grade.

Christian

The worst thing about my school is that I was not able to live on campus my first year. It was an experience that I wish I could have had.

Maximilien

The worst thing about the University is the size. This was my freshman year and i was suprised when i was in a five hundred person lecture. There is a disscussion class once a week were you are in a samller setting but the the lecture size is a set back.

Kai

The worst thing about my school has to be the housing around the school. It is extremely expensive. The school does offer decent apartments to students who have lived in the dorms for atleast 2 years that are reasonable priced and very nice. But it is very crowded and only the lucky are selected. Since I'm a transfer student. I have to pay extremely large amounts of money for off campus housing. Even the cheap places are extremely expensive. The school should offer more on campus apartments.

With such a huge school provides many opportunities, including Greek life. With a huge Greek scene at our school, you will almost always find party-goers out and about. It is not necessarily hard to avoid if that is not your alley, but it is very noticeable. Expect to walk around the campus Sunday afternoon and see beer cans littering the grounds.

I dont think there are any bad things about the school. The only area in which I struggle is finances. Being an out of state student means very high expenses to attend the university. There are not many financial aid opportunites that I seem to be eligible for, and that can be quite stressful.

Robyn

There really isn't anything undesirable about my school. Two things that may turn off other students is how small we are. There are only about 2000 students who attend. This works well for me, however, as i like smaller settings. Another thing is we're in the mountains so there isn't a lot of things to do off campus. We're close to Greenville, but it's about a 30 minute drive.

Cedar

too much emphasis on trying to regulate greek life more.

Ashley

The worst aspect about UMD, is the large class size. In many of the majors, the class size is in the hundreds, and it makes it very hard to gain a relationship with a professor within the classroom. That being said, all professors have office hours, and discussion sections; which allows students to minimize the magnitude of their class size.

The worst thing for me is that there are very limited opportunitis for international students to win a scholarship or financial aid. The tuition fee for international students is quite a lot, especially when the currency is considered. It's really frustrating that a student with a great academic standing can not receive any award because he/ she is not a US sitizen/ permanent resident.

Alyssa

I love how there is so much to do, so many clubs and organizations to get involved in, and also how there are opportunites to meet new people all the time.

The worst thing about my school is not "too much freedom" as some students may say, but the service that it provides. For example, upon applying to my school, I was promised many "healthy" dining options. Bus instead they made food plan mandatory, which can't even be used in the only "organic" shop on campus. Along with that, we are charged more that 300 dollars as "dining service fee," which makes no sense because the food is very expensive (more expensive than common fast food), and we have to clean up the food by ourselves.

Danielle

The worst thing about my school is it's population. At times, I feel like I'm being swallowed up by the people around me, and I feel like I could be just another number. But, my closeness with my professors always reaffirms the fact that I am a person, not a number.

Paloma

The worst thing about my school is the dining services. Although I appreciate UMCP for their gesture of giving different foods in a buffet style, it is the same food everyday. For example, in the Dining Halls, students are given choices of chicken fingers or pizza or salad. However, these are the choices that are given everyday. After a while it gets pretty boring seeing the same food everytime you go into the Dining Hall. Moreover, the food is OVERPRICED. A meal consisted of three chicken fingers and fries, without a drink, is around $6 or even more.
