The University of Miami is best known for how much pride students, professors, administrators and alumni take in being a part of the wonderful community that the U has to offer. The University of Miami is more than an educational institution but a family that cares and supports one another no matter what. Loyalty and repsect are two characteristics that never falter in the members of the UM community.

My school is best known for how diverse the community in the school is. There are students attending the University of Miami that come from all around the world because they search the amazing education that we offer. Students here are provided with many resources to help them succeed from the Writing Center to improve your writing skills, to the Academic Resource Center in which you can get tutoring from other students who have previously done well in a class you need help with. Also, there are many organizations so every student can find a home in the university.

For homecoming we have a big ceremony called the boat burning. Everyone gathers around the lake as we light a boat on fire, it is said if it sinks before the sail is burned we will lose the football game, but if it doesn't, we will win. Also in February there is an all weekend Olympics called sportsfest where you get together with a team (your floor if you are a freshman) and compete in everything from Wii Sports, to flag football, to cornhole. The whole school comes together and if it's nice out, it makes for a really nice weekend.

Miami use to be best known for their football program. Due to recent dissappointments though, the shifts has gone over to our academics. Miami's now number 38 in world u.s news report ranking and the number one school in the state of florida. Each year the average GPA for freshmen increases. The school of Education is one of the best in the nation. Also the School of Law is in the top of all colleges for Taxation Law.

My favorite tradition is that when someone turns 21, you have to have a beer at the Rat. The Rat, also known as the Rathskeller is the only on-campus restaurant which also happens to serve alcohol. This has been a long standing tradition. At the moment, however, they have torn down the original Rat, much to the displeasure of multiple students, and will be incorporating it into a new building. This is my favorite tradition because it's something that all UM students do, your friends join you and it's like a mini-celebration in itself!

Sportsfest is far and away my favorite campus tradition. It's an entire weekend in the spring where the whole school competes against each other for a pair of personalized sweat pants. Each of the residential colleges and the commuters make teams and compete individually for a catered meal from the restaurant of their choice and a personalized track suit for every member of the team. We compete in everything from canoe races around the lake in the middle of campus to flag football and rock, paper, scissors. It is really competitive but really fun because there's something for everyone and it really fosters school unity and pride.
