Can you believe that school will be out in just a few short weeks? I don’t know about you, but it seems like only yesterday I was enjoying the warm rays of summer and now I’m bundling up to stave off the cold winds of winter. Burrr! Although I love the holidays, it’s also a stark reminder that school will be over before you know it. But, before you head off to visit family or start your Christmas shopping, don’t forget one important task on your college to-do list…Scholarships! Now is the perfect time to sit down and complete your essays and applications, but where should you start? Unfortunately, Santa can’t help you in this department, so I’ve put together a list of 10 scholarships you can start working on right now.
1. Heart of America Scholarship
The American Society of Safety Engineers is offering two $1,000 scholarships for U.S. and international (Egypt) students who are pursuing a career in occupational safety and health (or related field). Deadline: December 1, 2012.
2. AFA Teen’s Video Competition
U.S. students between the ages of 13 and 19 are encouraged to submit a video response to the topic listed on the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America (AFA) website. First place will receive $500 and one runner-up will receive $250 for college. Deadline: December 1, 2012.
3. Love Your Body Poster Contest
The National Organization of Women is offering four awards in this fun contest. U.S. and international students of any age may submit an original poster design that addresses this year’s theme. One winner will be selected in the following categories: elementary/middle school, high school, college and open field (non-student). Deadline: December 2, 2012.
4. Most Valuable Student Scholarship Competition
High school seniors, who plan to enroll full-time in college next fall, may enter this scholarship competition sponsored by the Elks National Foundation. A total of 500 awards will be given, ranging in value from $1,000 to $15,000 each. Students do not have to be Elks members (or related to a member) to apply. Deadline: December 7, 2012.
5. CrossLites Scholarship Contest
International and U.S. high school, undergraduate, and graduate students may apply for this scholarship contest. Students must submit a short essay (400 to 600 words) based on one of several quotes made by Dr. Charles Parker. A total of 33 awards will be given, ranging in value from $250 to $2,000 each. Deadline: December 14, 2012.
6. Valley Humanities Review High School Scholarship
International and U.S. high school students are eligible to apply to this essay competition. Topics must be within the humanities field and can include, but are not limited to: literature, film, history, religion, philosophy, art, art history and foreign languages. Essays should be between 2,500 and 6,000 words. One $500 award is available. Deadline: December 15, 2012.
7. HSF/Got Milk? Futuro con Leche Scholarship
The Hispanic Scholarship Fund is offering this need-based award. Students must be graduating high school seniors with a grade point average of 3.0 or higher. Only Hispanic students who are eligible to receive a Pell Grant will be considered. The number of $4,000 awards offered is based on available funding. Deadline: December 15, 2012.
8. Freedom Alliance Scholarship Fund
This award is available for U.S. undergraduate students who are the dependent child of a U.S. soldier, sailor, airman, Marine, or guardsman who was killed, permanently disabled or has been classified as POW/MIA. Students must be 26 or younger. The number of awards and value varies. Deadline: December 15, 2012.
9. Christophers Video Contest for College Students
Any undergraduate or graduate student may enter this video contest sponsored by The Christophers. Students must submit a short video (five minutes or less) that addresses how one person can make a difference. Up to eight awards are offered, ranging in value from $100 to $2,000 each. Deadline: December 16, 2012.
10. Pioneers of Flight Scholarship
U.S. college sophomores and juniors, who are pursuing a career in general aviation, may apply. Two $1,000 awards are offered annually. Deadline: December 28, 2012.
