Today is National Dentist’s Day, but we’re guessing it’s not one of those holidays you eagerly look forward to each year. Honestly, who enjoys going to the dentist? It’s definitely not high on the list of places to go, and just consider those in the profession. Could you image spending all day looking at teeth? Or continually having to deal with bad breath? It takes a special person to follow that career path. So, in honor of all those good guys and gals who want to make the world a better place one smile at a time, we’ve put together a short list of scholarships for dental students; hopefully these great awards will help take a bite out of their college tuition bills.
1. ADA Foundation Scholarships
First scholarships for dental students is the ADA Foundation scholarship. The American Dental Association (ADA) offers several scholarships for dental students, including awards for dental hygiene, dental assisting, and dental laboratory assistants. Scholarships are valued at $1,000 each, and up to 30 awards are offered annually. Deadline: March 14.
2. CBCF Louis Stokes Health Scholars Program
Each year, the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation awards 10 scholarships valued up to $8,000 each. Each applicant must be a current undergraduate majoring in a health-related field with a grade point average of 3.0 or higher. Deadline: March 15.
3. Healthcare & Nursing Scholarship Award
High school seniors and current college students planning to pursue healthcare careers may be eligible for this $500 scholarship. Deadline: May 1.
4. Latinos for Dental Careers Scholarship
Another scholarships for dental students is the Latinos for Dental Careers scholarship. The California Dental Association provides several $1,000 scholarships each year to aspiring Hispanic dental students. Students enrolled in California dental schools are eligible to apply. Deadline: May 31.
Later this year, the following scholarships will also be available to those pursuing careers in dentistry.
5. NHSC Scholarship Program
The National Health Service Corps provides dental students (and other healthcare students) with up to four years of tuition payments and monthly living stipends. Students must commit to providing a year of service to communities in need for each year of assistance they receive. The application cycle opens in late March. Deadline: TBA.
6. Tylenol Future Care Scholarship
Beginning in April, students may submit applications for this award. A total of 40 scholarships are offered; 30 scholarships are valued at $5,000 each, and 10 scholarships are valued at $10,000 each. Deadline: June 2014.
7. ADEA Scholarship Program
Another dental student scholarships is the ADEA scholarship. The American Dental Education Association partners with several companies to offer various scholarships to dental students. These include the Crest Oral-B Laboratories Scholarships for Dental Hygiene Students Pursuing Academic Careers, Preventive Dentistry Scholarships, Sigma Phi Alpha Linda DeVore Scholarship, Crest Oral-B Laboratories Scholarships for Predoctoral Dental Students Pursuing Academic Careers, and the TheraBreath Student Research Fellowships. Deadline: November 2014.
8. Armed Forces Health Professions Scholarship Program
Several military branches offer scholarships to medical school students, including the Army, Navy, and Air Force. Awards cover all direct educational costs, and can cover expenses from one to four years. In exchange for the scholarships, students must agree to serve one year of active duty for each year of participation in the scholarship program. Deadline: Rolling.
