What should every freshman at Alabama State University know before they start?

Kyle

If I as able to go back in time, the first thing that I would do was tell myself to cherish every moment. I had a wonderful time in High School but I feel as if I was unable to really realize how much fun I was having until I left. I had a great group of friends that I was able to always hang out with and regardless of what we did it was always fun. You almost don't realize what you had until it's gone. Another thing that I would have done was worked a little bit more so I could have more fun money to spend when I go out so the first thing I do when I get back in the summer is find a job and as soon as possible. All in all I had a great senior year but cherish every moment would be my advice.

Sheldon

Prepare yourself mentally to study hard.

Sheldon

I would tell myself to study hard and keep my GPA up, because the lower your GPA and ACT scores are the more classes you have to take. Also, don't get to carried away with all of the parties. Stay focused and study hard.

The transition is probably the hardest thing about college life. The best way to cope with the transition is to keep a low profile for the first year, or at least the first semester. It's good to get involved, but don't get too involved your first year, because your first year is the most critical, as it is the foundation of your collegiate education. In other words, focus on your GPA as a freshman. Later in the years, you can tackle whatever you feel like you can handle. Financially, it's always good to save your money. Whatever money you receive, put at least half of it in savings and use the other half to buy school supplies and entertainment, in that order. Beware of internet scams that promise to make you money, but instead charge outrageously priced hidden fees in their terms and conditions. Always make an attempt to do your homework the first day it is assigned. Know your curriculum for your major so that you won't take unnecessary classes. But most importantly, have fun. It only lasts four years, so make it enjoyable. You get out what you put in. Put in your best.

Some advice I would give parents and students about finding the right college is do not choose a college based on wether or not your friends will attend. Also do not pick a college based on how much fun you think they have. You should pick a college based on you academic goals; wether or not they have the major you are looking for or not. Although I think parents and students should consider tuition, I do not think their decision should be based on that. Once you diceide if the college you want to attend has the major you are looking for, I think then you should consider the other activities that are offered by the school, such as clubs. The student and parents should sit and consider all the options before making a choice. Choosing a college is a big decision and it should not be taken lightly.

Research the college to the best of your ability and take a visit before attending

Yleis

Start your preparation and college search early. Also, if it is possible, makes sure to visit the college first. During your college experience, do not forget your main purpose for attending, TO LEARN! Many people get to college and forget the purpose. Grades and GPA's are everything, and you should work your hardest, and do your best to keep them up. If you need help with something or have questions, ask. Close mouths do not get fed. I would also recommend going to college away from home. This gives you the chance to grow into a man or a woman. I know it made me the woman I am today. Also, Always remember to keep God first. He is the captain of your sea and he will not lead you astray.

The advice to be given to parents and students is to tour the school you plan to attend. The faculty and staff are available for any questions and concern you may have.... Research question common questions to ask when you make it to campus. Tour the dorms and pay a visit to the cafe. Keep an open mind about the schools you visit and make multiple visit to the school that has your best interest. Also attend a school that is acredited and that supports your major. Take a look at the diversity and how comfortable you will be in the class surroundings.

Just go with your heart.

The advice that I would give parents and students about finding the right college and making the most of the college experience is to make sure that you are financially stable. If the parents are not financially stable when their sons or daughters go off to school, the educational experience of the student will be a continuous struggle. The student will not be able to enjoy the traditional college experience without a family with a strong financial background because the student will always have to work a part time or full time job while in school, thus missing out on extracurricular activities on and off campus. These activities may consist of fraternity or sorority community service projects. Most importantly, working deviates from studying, and will therefore result in the decline of the student's grade point average. As a result, if the student has financial support from their family, the option of working may be cancelled out, which may allow the student to enjoy the traditional college experience, and maintaining a competitive grade point average.

I would give future students and their parents advice about knowing how to stay pro-active. That's the best advice I can give because if you don't stay pro-active during this experience, it will really hurt you. Being pro-active will also keep you ahead of the game and up on your business. It's like the commercials on t.v. about pro-activ skin solutions. They take away pimples, and leave you skin clear, clean, and refreshed. Staying pro-active in school also is like that. You stay clear of trouble, and keep yourself on the right path for success.

Support is beautiful. Parents support in their child's collegiate endeavors is essential. Being in your child's life during this time is healthy. Hopefully lessons installed in him or her will finally pay off in college. Once they make it to this stage you should be more of a counselor for the majority, it?s better to allow them to live and learn. Now, if they're preparing to participate in a crazy decision that will clearly hurt them then hopefully you still have enough authority to guide them to alternative routes. Students, good advice wouldn?t hurt! If whoever cares for you is trying to help you make a decision don?t get the I AM TO GROWN SYNDROM, just listen. If you?re told not to pick that school JUST because your friends are going there it?s probably good to listen. The university you attend should be picked based upon your choice career path, not your friends. Hang around people who are trying to graduate and are focused. No, this doesn?t mean you?re nerdy. You can have great fun and great grades too. Most of all take full advantage of your college opportunity.

Bianca

I would say start early in your high school years. Keep up the grades so you will have all kinds of scholarships. I think that the parents should be invovled.

Roswell

The advice i would give to parents and/or students about finding a college would be to find a great location and environment. A great number of the student body and if you can afford it or not. Another suggetion to make sure you meet with colleges for tours to get a full view of the college and how professors and teachers teach there class. While getting a tour look for computer labs, tutoring rooms, and of course dorm rooms. This is advice I would give parents and/or students.

Briana

i believe that you should pick a place where u feel comfetable, secure. a college will find it way to you. i suggest that you nbegan looking you 2nd year of high school. remeber to reach for the stars and never give up on your dream

Johnny

The best advice i would give parents and/or students is to choose a college that is right for you. It is understandable financially things are a little tight, but don't go blind folded on choosing a college. If you're active and want to be heard in your environment and want to make a difference, then visit a college and see if it fits your description. Check out the campus, see what the people are like, look at the college courses and see what they offer that catches your attention. College is where you grow and learn to be responsible on your own. Eating healthy is important and being involved in the things he or she may like to do. Whether it is music, art , or sports, make sure whatever you're interested in doing on your spare time is available. When you pick any college to attend, make sure you feel comfortable like home, or even better.

Antwan

College is something you don't want to miss out on. You learn lots of stuff and being out on your own . Bein in the real world.

VeLita

Deciding what college a person should attend should not only depend upon the college's reputation, but upon the student's personality in relation to the way most students on the campus appear to be.

larnesha

My advice would be to choose a school wisely. They should also think about their financial status.

Katori

A student will enjoy any university they attend, and will learn many things about themselves and academics--as long as the student keeps an open mind and a open heart.
