What are the most popular student activities/groups?

Robin

Greek life is AMAZING!! I would recommend anyone to get involved in it!! Sigma Kappa is where it's at!

Amanda

Greek organizations would probably be the most popular. We have lots of sisterhoods, philanthropic events, socials, and fundraisers. Our athletic events are not very popular, the only athletic event people attend is football and sometimes we can't even get enough people to go to the game for attendance purposes for the MAC. Greek Life usually requires us to attend some speakers on campus and they usually turn out to be worth while. The hangouts up here are the bars. We have a downtown area that has a bunch of cute bars then we have O'kellys. Especially since I just turned 21, on any given night my friends and I will be at a different bar. A lot of people hang around main street as well. If we don't drink on a saturday usually we will just hangout at our house and play rock band, or go to the movies.

Many of the students who live in the dorms leave their doors open so that they can have the chance to interact with the people who live on their floor or in the building. I think that it is a good way to get to know people or to just say hello. One of the most popular things to do on campus is to go to the athletic events and to guest speakers when they are here. We love to show our school spirit and support out athletes in any way that we can. We also love when guest speakers come because it gives us a chance to learn about ourselves and others and issues that the world is facing right now.

I am involved in a social sorority, Sigma Sigma Sigma. Going greek was the best decision of my life, I don't know what I would do without my sisters. I know that all greeks say that but it is so true. We do so much stuff for the community such as raising money, raking leaves, collecting teddy bears for our annual teddy bear drive. We also participate in other fraternity and sororities philanthropic events, such as Lambda Chi Alpha's taco dinner, or ladies night, delta zeta's pancake breakfast...the list goes on. I met my closest friends through the sorority, you spend a lot of time with other greeks and you just have the time of your life. I came to college wanting to make friends and I'm leaving with the best ones of my life. When I am awake at 2am on a Tuesday there are so many things that I could be doing. One, working, two hanging out with friends, three at the bar, or four relaxing wiht my roomates having heart to hearts or laughing hystarically at some silly story. Getting involved in something on campus is the most important thing to do in college because otherwise you will get sucked into probably partying a lot. By getting involved you will have options to do on a Saturday night other than a party. You will meet people that are just like you with the same interests, you may go on trips, or particpate in volunteer activities. Getting involved and staying involved is my biggest advice for an incoming freshmen, you don't realize how important it is to stay busy because otherwise you will get yourself in trouble.

I love the social life at Central. If you walk through a dorm at night, you are more than likely to find almost every door open and students interacting. Althletic events, speakers, and other programs are very popular because they are free of charge to any central student. Most people meet their new friends through living with them or being apart of the same group/organization. I am a part of the Delta Zeta sorority and I'll be honestly when I say that sororities and fraternities are not very important to those on our campus. Only about 3-8{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} of our campus is greek.. and what most people dont know is that we contribute to over 70{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} of the money raised for the community. Most people think of us as just a bunch of people who party and don't realize how much we do for the community, or that we have to maintian a certian GPA and do study hours, or that we have socials with other groups to meet people who may not be the same as us and learn from them. We are extremely overlooked.

Kristi

Our greek i feel is one of the best in Michigan, its quite large, no hazing laws are strictly enforced and we have a chapter in my eyes that fits everyone. I also am involved with the volunteer center and love it. I also am in a few different Leadership activities in which are advancing me too.

Jennifer

Greek life is the greatest! It's a nice connection and a great way to know people. Sorority life leads to lifelong friendship and a home away from home. It's one of the best decisions I've ever made!

Alyssa

Sororities, fraternities and sports are the most popular groups on campus. I am a part of Delta Zeta and it has been an amazing experience being a part of this group. It has introduced me to many people and leadership opportunities. Some students leave their doors open in the dorms but not all. The athletic events are not that popular. Most people date people that they met at a party or at the bar. I met my closest friends through Delta Zeta. People party all the time. On a Saturday you could go bowling or to the movies for activities that do not involve drinking.

Maureen

I think that all of the on campus organizations are good because they get people involved and help build freindships and connections for life.

Chelsea

greek life is very popular on this campus. being part of a sorority, i think it is one of the best ways to get involved at cmu. there are certain nights that everyone goes out and has fun...tues, thursdays and the weekend. people party quite a bit and have fun.

Vanessa

The Social life at CMU is a lot of fun. There is always something going on around campus and it is a very friendly environment. There is never time where if you do not want to be in your room watching tv you, you have no other options. There is always something happening.

Felisha

There are not enough students that are Greek. The image of the greek society on CMUs campus is poor and its doesn't just come from the students. The faculty have all the stereo types of greeks in their minds and no matter how much good the greeks do on campus it is a big misconception that as all we do is party. We were all founded on something bigger than any of us could have possibly dreamed of. The fact that the campus keeps trying to bring down all the good things that we try and accomplish on campus is a crappy thing to do.

Kristen

Our football team is very popular on campus. But they have a right to be popular because they've won two MAC championships two years in a row and they've also went to the Motor City Bowl two years in a row and won it the first year they went. They have a great program here. I am involved with the women's soccer program. We have held the highest GPA in the nation for the past two years in a row and are shooting for a third year. As for the dorm scene, if you keep your door open, you will meet a lot more people and your experience will be much more fun. If you get close to your neighbors it can be awesome because you can just walk in to each other's room and sit down and just talk or watch a movie together or just have fun. I believe it's also important to try and get along with your roommates because obviously you will have a better experience. If not, just try to make the best of it and if worse comes to worse, the RA's will let you switch rooms. I met my closest friends, who are my roommates, through soccer so I think it's important to be involved whether it be through a sport, a club team, a student organization, or even if you just do the freshman Leadership Safari before school starts. If I'm awake at 2am on a Tuesday, that usually means I'm studying for a really hard test I have the next day or the day after that. Otherwise, I'm fer sure sleeping.

Allison

The Greek organizations are probably the most popular on campus. A group I am invovled in is Hall council. Students in my door definately have their doors open. Athletic events are very popular.

Akli

I think a lot of the sports teams are pretty popular, especially Men's Basketball and football, as well as Wrestling.

Wade

Obviously the most popular groups on campus would be the fraternities and sororities, closely followed by the more exclusive football team, and then the rest of the athletics teams. I'm involved in both cross country and track, and I absolutely love it. I feel that running teaches me many things in life, and the degree of which we do it pushes our limits to such extremes that it makes anything seem possible. I would say that, at least in my hall, about half of people leave their doors open in the evening when everyone's usually back. Football, basketball, and baseball games are popular. Not athletic events. In my opinion more people went to CMU vs. WMU game at Western than drove the 3 miles down the road to go watch the cross country MAC Championship race. What dating scene? All I ever here about it people hooking up with someone for a night at a party that they more often then not don't remember. I met my closest friends through running. If I'm ever awake past midnight, I'm doing homework. The biggest traditional that I've heard about is Central/Western weekend, which of course didn't happen this year. I would say, on average, that people party probably about 2-3 nights out of the week. Fraternities/Sororities are only important to host large parties, other than that I don't see them raching out to the community or the school much. Last weekend I ran, slept a lot, and went to my second party of the year where I left at midnight because I was getting bored. Besides drinking, you can go see a movie, grab dinner with some friends, stay in and relax, or catch up on homework or get to bed early. About the only things I do off campus are go to Wal-mart, go out to eat, go see a movie, and run.

Gene

There are so many activites on campus. There is always some kind of sporting event every week that you can attend and they also have clubs and intrameral sports you can join. They also have concerts sometimes which can give you something to do on the weekend.

Harper

the most popular athletic teams on campus are (obviously) football, basketball and girls soccer, because these are the teams that have the best advertising and promotions. field hockey is a smaller, less known sport so it isnt suprising that we dont have as many fans when there arent very many students that understand the game or really know what it looks like. athletic events tend to be pretty popular, as long as there was some advertising ahead of time to give people fair notice. the best attended events are football and basketball, mostly because the community is so involved in these sports. the biggest events on campus each year are mainstage, which is a concert slash outdoor fair thing that takes place during welcome week the first weekend back at school in the fall. another big event is our annual football game against our big instate rivals western michigan. homecoming is also a really big deal. other highlights include mock rock which is hosted by the greeks each year. there is a very large greek population on campus whith many different sororities and fraternities to choose from. in the dorms it just depends, some rooms will be wide open at all times of the day, when other people keep their door not only shut, but locked as well.

Katelyn

There are over 250 registered student groups on campus. You can get involved in anything. I'm involved in education, music, religious, and community service organizations. Many students will leave their dorms open. Football games are extremely popular and many other sports are too. There is always some sort of guest speaker or presentation going on about an array of topics.

Alex

I'm a member of the greek community here at Central. I joined a social sorority called Alpha Sigma Alpha. It's been a great way to meet other students, whether they're greek or are interested in becoming greek. It's fun to be a part of such a diverse sub-community on campus. A lot of students leave they doors open. The football games are always packed as for the other sports events I dont know. In some classes it's required to attend theatre performances or go listen to a guest speaker. I haven't got a clue about the dating scene here because I came here already in a committed relationship and have no interest in dating anyone else. When im awake at 2am its usually because i'm finishing homework that I had put off earlier. There's a lot of activities around campus that are well advertised if you need something to do. I think that fraternities/sororities are very important, but I'm also in one.
