What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

Hey, here is some advice about college life and the transition into freshman year. When you go out to parties, make sure you go with friends, and keep an eye out for each other, and don't put your cup down. When you schedule for classes, look up the requirements for your major so you don't miss out! Don't lend out all your quarters to be nice the first week of school, you'll need them! Get active, and join clubs or sports, it helps you meet people and can be fun! Do not go boy crazy, and party all the time, when you come back next year, everyone will think you're the party girl. Getting your classes out of the way in the morning helps to free up your schedule instead of spreading them out through the day. Have fun and be safe! Leave the high school drama in high school!

My school is filled with very friendly people.

The students in the classes how eachother learn about the different topics within the course. Individuals take the courses because they are required for their major and the student may have an interest in the topic.

What's the one thing you wish someone had told you about freshman year?

I wish I knew more about the staff and the involvement they have with the students.

What's unique about your campus?

The professors are really cool and knowledgeable, and the support staff care about the students a lot.

What kind of person should not attend this school?

person that enjoys small classes, with intentive teachers, can keep themself occupied, wants to play college sports

What do you consider the worst thing about your school? Why?

I feel that the worst thing about my school was the limited supportive services available to accelerated students.

Describe your favorite campus traditions.

It isn't. It's known for not really being known. Particularly, if someone does recognize the name, the first thing that comes out of their mouth is a comment about it being an all-girls school and nothing else, not even where it is (Philadelphia). Chestnut Hill hasn't been an all girls school for well over five years now and that just goes to show how it has done nothing to make a name for itself, atleast positively.

What do you brag about most when you tell your friends about your school?

My school looks like its a castle. It is located on beautiful property, the people are really nice and its close to the city.

What are the academics like at your school?

The student to teacher ratio is only 11:1 so unlike most state schools you should expect small class sizes and and one-on-one attention with your professors. The downfall- your professors will know when your not in class. The benefit- teachers are always willing to help with anything regardless of if its for their class, another class, or something not even school related. They will also get to know you on a more personal level, which helps makes letters of recommendation more personal for any type of grad school you may think about applying to later on. Also, if you decide to come to CHC don't be surprised if you end up eating lunch with a professor in the dining hall or arrive at a meeting and find an assortment of teas and snacks has been laid out for you to enjoy.

What is your overall opinion of this school?

To be completely honest, I could not be more impressed with the college I chose. CHC continuously goes beyond my expectations of what a college should entail, and I could not have made a better selection as to which college to attend. In regards to my favorite things about this college, I have narrowed it down to three major parts. For starters, I love the fact that our student-to-teacher ratio is 11:1. This means that in class, when something doesn't make sense and I raise my hand, I will be called upon within a matter of seconds. I hear my friends from other universities talk about the difficulties that they have had with classes in which they were one student out of a couple hundred, and it makes me appreciate this small ratio even more. The sizes of our campus, student, and faculty body are at the perfect level. The new social room is another thing I love, because I am a commuter, and it is a calm and quiet place to sit and relax in between classes, without having to walk over to the library. Also, they started serving coffee and snacks in the social room, which means I can even grab a bite to eat before my classes start. The new fitness center is another spot I love about our campus. I get a lift and run in every day, and the new fitness center has the equipment to accommodate everyone's workout style. From simple workouts to more complex lifting, you will be able to get a workout in the new fitness center. I truly am enjoying my college experience here at CHC.

What is the stereotype of students at your school? Is this stereotype accurate?

Typically a Chestnut Hill student is stereotyped as being extremely well rounded. Most students in the community are involved in several different things including sports, clubs, and other groups.

What kind of person should attend this school?

A student who wants small classroom sizes, and a school that is close nit in the student body.

What are the most popular student activities/groups?

Our school has an endless amount of activities that go on, so I will mention a few for the sake of this response. For athletes, all of our teams (with the exception of the men's lacrosse team) compete in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference, or the CACC for short. A few of the men's sports include: baseball, soccer, and basketball. A few women's sports include: basketball, volleyball, and softball. If you are more into the arts, our college puts on student-run plays and musicals. Along with this, there are also orchestra and choir concerts. Our school also participates in competitive Quidditch. A special event is held on our campus as schools from up and down the east coast come to our college to compete in the sport. Also, with the Metroplex and Plymouth Meeting Mall nearby, students always have something to do. Our school even sponsors trips to places such as Hershey Park, Broadway, and Phillies games, to name a few. The tickets are cheap, but the fun is endless.

What are your classes like?

I'm an education major here at CHC, so I'm currently in my Practicum semester. This means that for one of my classes I get to go to an elementary school in the area and observe and teach lessons. This is really cool and a really great experience. They always say that you never know how much or how little you're going to like teaching until you get in front of the classroom and CHC's practicum class allows you to get that experience! I'm also taking a Methods class in which we talk about different methods of teaching. I am, of course going to be using a lot of these strategies in the future. In addition to these classes I'm taking a Shakespeare class, we read the plays, watch the movies, and in terpret some scenes on our own. It's a pretty good class, and Shakespeare is always a classic.

What's the most frustrating thing about your school?

The most frustrating thing is the financial aid/student accounts office.

What's the Greek scene like?

Chestnut Hill College does not have any Greek life. The only things that can be associated with Greek life are our Honor Societies, named with Greek letters (Psi Chi - Psychology Honors Society, Alpha Lambda Delta - Freshmen Honor Society, etc.) We believe in inclusivity and a holistic education. CHC's philosophy is that students should not be excluded from joining any activity, club, or organization that they wish to.

When you step off campus what do you see?

Beautiful Fairmount park is right across from our College campus! It is a beautiful place to ride your bike (we have a bike share system, so you can rent a bike with your CHC school ID) or just take a walk with your friends on a nice day. I think it is the most beautiful in the Fall with all the leaves changing and in the winter with the snow on the banks of the creek!

Where is the best place to get work done on campus?

In the Rotunda of St. Joseph's hall, there are small cubby areas on each side in the towers. They have tables, chairs, outlets for your labtop, large windows for fresh air, heaters for the winter, and a great, inspiring view that is really motivating when you're trying to write a 15-page paper...eek!

My opinion of Chestnut Hill College is that it is the platonic ideal of a major league college. It provides the students a chance to get involved and to understand the world around them in a safe and lively environment. The campus is spacious and lovely and my fellow students are a pleasure to be around.

It is a phenomenal college for those who look for smaller classroom sizes, a college with a great psychology and criminal justice program, and for those who love a small, yet always bustling atmosphere. It is also great for Harry Potter lovers of all ages.

Honestly, the lack of available technology for a cyber security/computer lab is terrible. Anyone can walk in, minimal security. In the parking lot someone was raped, but they have their priority set on parking permits and preventing people from parking in Chestnut Hill College, rather than the safety of the students. If they were busy patrolling to make sure students are safe, than giving out tickets and car boots, their job would be more worth while. The classes, for your degree are completely pointless. I have one class that is important and it is for one day a week for three hours, while on the other hand, I have a probability and statistics class that takes up one hour, three days a week. My time would be better spent learning the fundamentals of digital security and preventative measures of cyber security, in order to be a better professional in my career with the ability to help people. At least, I hope to help people with the skills I have. On top of all that, getting a meeting with my advisor is living hell. I have to work and attend classes. If you are an adult who has to work to support themselves, to survive, this college is not for you. If you do not have money for you books and supplies, let alone transportation, do not go here. Chestnut Hill College is loyal to your money, not your success. If they were loyal to success, they would ensure all assignments would be known and communication between students and professors is solidified. If success is what they want you to have, they would make it easier for students, because they know the worldly turmoil their students are facing. When I say success, I am not talking about the work it entails to obtain a degree. I am speaking of the knowledge you learn in order to obtain that degree. The knowledge that should be there when you graduate and start a profession as a professional. Most people learn hands-on. They learn by being taught. I have spent more than enough money out of my own pocket to receive an education. When I first signed up to join Chestnut Hill College, I thought, "Great! Finally! A college willing to work with my schedule and teach me everything I need to know about being a professional in my desired industry. A college willing to work with me. The professor reviews are good too". However, now I am finding out they lied. They lied about the financial necessities students would need. They lied about their teacher reviews. They lied about the hidden fees that basically almost put me out of house AND home, with no food on the table for months and bills with shut off notices. Their money does not go into ensuring the best education for their students. Their money, the students money, goes into the restructure of the school, landscapers, construction. Lastly, my final point that many would agree, I too asked for financial help to attend Chestnut Hill College. They said I had to pay a deposit. I said I could not afford to pay it as I do not depend on anyone financially and was out of work. I was blessed by someone who believed in me to finish college to pay the deposit. Only to find out another student had that fee waived for her/him for financial instability. When I said I would need help for my books, they offered nothing. When another student claimed he/she needed help with books, they found a, "Griffin Grant" to award him. Then this student and I compared GPA's. I had a higher GPA. Now tell me that is not a slap in the face as I have come from a Community College, 1 and a half years of which I was homeless, worked as hard as I could in order to get a high GPA to get into a school like Chestnut Hill College to starve for a month because I had no food or money, try to work out with other students how I am getting to school and getting my books. That, "Griffin Grant", could have done a lot for me at Chestnut Hill College. I also pondered if it had to do with race or gender seeing as it was a white male and I am a mixed woman, but I dislike making claims about racism, however, if the shoe fits.

I absolutely adore Chestnut Hill College for all that it offers. There is a club/activity for everyone of all races/genders to do! The dean allows her dogs to be therapy dogs which helps out the students during finals week when they become overwhelmed, not many campuses do that.
