Academics shouldn't be an issue so long as you go to class and do your work. The profs I've had in engineering really know their stuff and there is a great network between them, you, and the other students. The first few semesters, expect a lot of international TAs (ESPECIALLY in math and science). In general, they know what they're doing, it just takes time to understand what some of them are saying...

Most of my lectures are very large and impersonal.

I know my professors names. My favorite class is companion animal science. My least favorite was chemistry... ew!! Students are very competitive. The most unique class I have taken was meat science. I don't spend time with my professors outside of class.

It's a big family. Academics at Iowa State are time worthy. I've never been a good student, but the help is readily available when I need it. I'm in the political science department, and there as well as through the rest of the university you have a good chance of your professors remembering who you are and how you were in their class. This helps - for references of jobs, internships, or even just future classes. Education at Iowa State is geared both toward learning and getting a job...I'm a junior and still feeling clueless about the direction I want to take with a career. However, deep down I'm confident because I know that Iowa State has prepared me to be a well-rounded person. Employers know this when they hear you're from ISU.

Some of my professors know my name. My favorite class is U ST 160. My least favorite are big lectures...sometimes. Class participation depends on which class it is and how interested the students are in the subject. Yes students are competitive. My major/department is business. No I do not spend time with my professors outside of class. Iowa State's academic requirements are very appropriate. Education at Iowa State is geared toward learning for its own sake and toward getting a job.

Many of the first year classes are quite large, but after you begin into the 300 level courses the classes become quite small and intimate. The most unique class I've taken was 328x, which was Cell Physiology in Human Disease, and exploratory course offered by a professor who had first hand knowledge of the research discussed and presented in the course.

The teachers are very friendly and overall there whenever you need help. The classes are interesting and very informative. I have only had one problem with a class. I feel like the requirements are easy to meet. I also feel it is easy to complete the requirements within the usual 4 years. I don't feel like competitiveness is an issue. I think students are there to help each other.
