Louisiana Tech University Top Questions

What should every freshman at Louisiana Tech University know before they start?

Lance

I would tell myself not to be so nervous because the experiences I have and the friends I make will far exceed any experiences from my high school days.

In college, you have more control over how much work you put into your classes. You are only in classes a few hours each day, so take advantage of the extra time you have during the day to keep up with the material. I encourage you to get involved in different activities, but know your limits and don't let your academics suffer due to extracurriculars.

Choose a college that you think is right for you. The school that makes you feel at home and not one that is chosen for you. Be your own mind and not follow others. Go to a school that will give you the highest ability to do whatever it is in life that you want.

Give them the leeway to even consider other options and expect your college experience (if any) to be relevant while not assuming that certain things just wouldn't have changed at all. You'll both be surprised. If you want to hear from them regularly, then do not blame their lack of success on not studying/applying themselves because you cannot be so certain. Spring for a care package or plane ticket if you permit them to be away from home.

Find a school that fits you, for one. If you can't tell, visit. Spend a few days about campus, and you can generally get a good feel for how life is at school. After that, don't slack off. You won't get anywhere if you don't knuckle up and do your homework, and this isn't high school. So don't expect to have people cater to you just because you're in class. Its your life, now. The best advice is to decide what you want to make of it, and work towards that.

Students should find a place that they feel completely comfortable. Otherwise, they will have a harder time focusing on school. If students enjoy certain types of classes or activities all of these things should be examined. Students should also try to participate in an activity that allows them to spend a few days getting to know present students at the school. While the admissions officers can tell you many things, students can give a student's point of view. Asking several students would be ideal because asking only one could result in an inaccurate picture based on biases.

Go and visit the school and try to see yourself in that school. Go out if you can, and if thats your thing. Check out what your major is like and see what college its in because all colleges can differ (ie college of business is way diff from college of engineering)

Take your choice for higher learning seriously. This is the beginning of the rest of your life. Take the time to find the place to get the highest quality education now istead of wishing you had while stuck in a dead end job ten years down the road.
