Old Dominion University is wonderful in many ways. The faculty at ODU is often at the top of their game, and I have felt welcomed, accepted, and enriched by all of my professors. The degree structure is sensible, although vague at times. Many of my issues come with the safety concerns on campus, and the fact that these are often left unaddressed or pushed under the rug. In my almost two semesters alone, we have had four gun-related incidents. One of which was a fatal double shooting, which ODU attempted to brush off as being off-campus despite it being in the parking lot of the meal hall. If I did not grow up around such chaos my entire life, I would probably see the lack of safety on campus with much greater concern. However, as ODU is the only affordable school in the state of Virginia with a Marine Biology program, I am primarily here for the academic aspect of things; The academic quality of the university is very decent, with my only concerns being in the Math and Chemistry departments, which many students have such issues with that they often have to take these classes at a community college instead of at ODU.

I’m attending Old Dominion University as a freshman majoring in biomedical science on a pre-health track, and I couldn’t be happier studying there. ODU is one of the best research schools in Virginia, and it has many science opportunities that have given me a chance to pursue my dream, but that's not only the best part of attending that school After being at ODU for quite some time I have gotten to meet such amazing people and get out of my comfort zone. I'm a very shy person, so I tend to stay cooped up in my room a lot when going to college, but I've been able to step out of my bubble by doing clubs and talking to people in my classes. And with that, I have made an amazing group of friends who I cherish deeply, but even though that's one of my favorite parts of attending college it's not the main reason why I'm attending Old Dominion University. The main reason that I'm attending college is because by studying at college I will be getting one step closer to my dream. Which is the reason I chose the major I'm studying. Since I was four years old, I have dreamed of becoming a doctor, so my goal is to become a cardiovascular surgeon. Studying at ODU has allowed me to make it come true. Even though there is another amazing school with great medical programs, ODU was just the right fit for me. So I'm hoping to graduate with high honors from there to make the school that gave me a chance proud.

Old Dominion has great opportunities to succeed in many career paths. The faculty to student ratio leads to smaller class sizes which will provide more one on one time with the professors. The school is centrally located in Norfolk allowing for easy commutes. Overall, this is a great campus.

I believe that Old Dominion University offers a strong academic foundation and diverse opportunities for students to excel in their chosen fields. With its commitment to innovation and excellence, I think it is a great place for individuals to further their education and reach their full potential. Additionally, the university's supportive community and vast resources provide a conducive environment for personal and professional development. Overall, I believe Old Dominion University is a top choice for those looking to achieve their academic and career goals. The social environment here is great. There is something for everyone. Whether you are interested in joining clubs and organizations, attending events, or simply enjoying the vibrant campus atmosphere, Old Dominion University offers a well-rounded experience for all students. The university's strong sense of community fosters connections and friendships that last a lifetime.

I really enjoyed my time at ODU. I loved that the class sizes post100 levels were small. The professors I had were very hands on and always available. I enjoyed the variety of extracurriculars offered on campus. I will say the access to resources without a car is very limited.

It is a good school for me. It provides safety and I have friends. I love the campus life and all the shops and places to eat. It is warm and cozy in my room. My roommate is my best friend. We play soccer in the neighborhood and walk everywhere always feeling safe and secure.

old dominion is a very accepting school that students of every background will be comfortable at. It is also a very cheep school. My favorite part of ODU is that the queer students have their own dorm building where they can feel comfortable. It is also a very diverse campus race and ethnicity wise.

Old Dominion University is an incredible, welcoming environment where I feel truly at home. It is an institution where I feel my ability to succeed is fostered and cared for, and I am incredibly thankful for my friends, our incredible staff and faculty, for ensuring ODU is a positive place to perform academically.

Old Dominion University is a very diverse school with many opportunities. I'm truly honored to be a part of such an accredited university. The course load can be a bit stressful at times but the payoff is worth it in order to be one step closer to achieving my goals.

Overall, I think Old Dominion University provides sound academic information to the students. The professors are friendly and are willing to assist students. The students are diverse and appears to get along with each other well. There appear to be mutual respect among the students. The class sizes are not too large and are accommodating to students. Some of the dorms are a bit outdated and are the older dorms are located a little too far away from the main campus. Those dormitories need an overall reconstruction or need to be considered for some type of other facility. The dormitories that are located on campus are up to date. There is a big difference as the newer dorms are considered Taj Mahal and the older dormitories is like someone living in an area that is unkept. There are lots of convenience shops to get little essentials things that are needed. The food selection is not bad as a variety is provided. There is also the ability to purchase a good meal from Chipotle that is quite fulling.
The student body and the facilities that are provided on campus is state of the art. I am an introvert, so I do not get the opportunity to party as I try to focus on my studies. For the most part the work is challenging and sustainable. What I had to learn my first semester is to ensure that my grades are at least an A, so if I do not do well on the finals at least I will pass the class. So, far my experience at Old Dominion has been a major adjustment, but I am going to make it a rewarding experience.

I love it!!

Old Dominion University is a great school with passionate teachers who enjoy helping their students. The dorms are above average and most students have their priorities straight. It is true that students party, but they also find time to study and remind themselves why they are there.

I love Old Dominion University. This university diversity. Diversity in students, clubs, organizations, and more. Old Dominion University never has me bored. I was able to make friends of all types. At this school, I love seeing different cultures and traditions. This university has tons of great connections once students graduate. Many students find jobs or careers in their fields. It takes some getting used to at first, but you start to see other people's beliefs. It teaches you that it is ok to disagree without anger. This university is big on opinion but, they won't let violence or let a particular situation get out of hand. I would encourage anybody ready to step out of their comfort zone and see different styles and cultures to come to Old Dominion University.

My opinion of Old Dominion University is overall very good. I just transferred this year from a school in North Carolina, and ODU is very inviting. My advisor is nice and helpful, the campus is beautiful, and my instructors teach very well. Life on campus is very inviting and I have nothing bad to say about the school.

Old Dominion University is very high in academics. ODU is a welcoming campus with lots of resources to assist students. Online learning is good but can be better. Most professors are very helpful and willing to work with students in all situations. The school offers a lot of opportunities for students. What should every freshman at your school know before they start?
If I could go back in time and talk to myself, I would tell myself to keep focused on all lectures that are heavily dependent on power point and not from the text book. However, use the textbooks as a guide to what the teacher has covered, as well as what the teacher has notified you will be covered in the next session. Do not allow your friends to preoccupy your time. Prioritize the issues at hand, but do not overwhelm yourself. It is okay to have fun, but when you know that a deadline is rapidly approaching, and that an assignment needs to have plenty of time and attention, do not be afraid to tell your friends that you have to focus on school work. No matter what your friends may think of you, knowing that you have given your best time and effort into the task at hand, and that God will lead you the rest of the way, it does not matter. While they sit and procrastinate and then try to do their work at the last mintue, you can then rest knowing that all your work has been done and that it is time for fun.
What's the one thing you wish someone had told you about freshman year?
Every school has it's own culture of people and community. I wish I had known what kind of community resides here at ODU because I believe that college is meant for the sole pupose of learning, but not just in academics but within our very selves. It gives us the opportunity to grow ourselves individually, and make relationships. In a school that is mostly known in past years to be a communter school (it is no longer a communter school now), it can be difficult at times to involve oneself in the present community.
Describe how your school looks to someone who's never seen it.
My school offers programs and support staff to help new students feel comfortable from day 1. They offer several days of Orientation for new students to get them acclimated to campus life. The students on campus are friendly and willing to offer assistance when needed.
Here's your chance: Say anything about your college!
My school has a great learning envrionment as well as a great social environment. You'll never feel out of place at ODU, there is always a group of people for you to hang out with. Also, the students have a great sense of school spirit and pride.
Outgoing people looking for new experiences. Coming from a very small town in NJ, ODU's diversity has opened me up to new outlooks on life and has changed me for the better. I couldn't imagine going to any other school.
What do you brag about most when you tell your friends about your school?
I use these exact sentences: "ODU is the best school ever! Seriously, come visit if you don't believe me. It's the best school and everyone should go there!"
What is the stereotype of students at your school? Is this stereotype accurate?
I think the stereotype of students at my school is that they are southern as the school is located in southern Virginia. The stereotypical southern person is depicted as slightly uneducated, unclean, "hillbilly", and predominantly white as well as racist. The students at my school are so far detached from this stereotype. They are a diverse group from all over the country as well as the world as we have international students as well. And they are obviously a well educated group!
I love Old Dominion University. I am an online distance learner but I have visited the campus in Norfolk, VA and was welcomed with open arms as an ODU Monarch. The tuition is comparable, the professors are knowledgeable and compassionate, and the curriculum is challenging and thorough.
Academics are the most important thing at any college. The thing that makes ODU different is that the students here are always get the work done in a timely manner so that they can still have fun. It is all about time management skills. The professors here have interesting classes that keep the students interested. Another great factor is that there is always someone to help you out. There are professors, teacher assistants, tutors, and mentor available for extra help. As a computer science major, I have used all of those resources!
What are the most popular student activities/groups?
The most popular activities at Old Dominion are the football games and basketball games. Whether you are an athlete or just attending, the school spirit of ODU absolutely shines. The university has recently acquired a football team under a high demand of the students, and despite the fact that ODU is relatively new to having a football team they definitely do not play like they are new. And at each game the students are very excited to cheer the Monarchs on. Not only that, but at basketball games, our most renowned sport, the famous "ice cream and cake" dance always gets the students going. These are the times that students are most proud to wear our school colors.
The two things I hear students complaining about the most are the food, and parking for commuters, and I know I've complained about both of these, too.
Some of the professors I've had are really great. One of them was completely out of their mind, and a couple of them are monotone and really hard to listen to. I think the professors are probably pretty hit or miss, but I can't imagine that there's a school out there with all amazing professors.
All students must apply yearly for financial aid. This process starts with the FAFSA.
Though financial aid deadlines vary by school, it is a good idea to apply as soon as possible. For the upcoming school year, you can apply as early as October 1 for the FAFSA. Additional school aid will be dependent on the FAFSA results.
90% of students attending Old Dominion University receive some sort of financial aid.
41% were awarded federal grants.66%received federal loans. Many students do also need to apply for additional private student loans.
