Savannah College of Art and Design Top Questions

What do you consider the worst thing about Savannah College of Art and Design? Why?

Marshall

Mainly three things: 1. A number of the dormitories (such as Boundary and Barnard) are not owned by the school - they are privately owned by members of the board and that money does not get recirculated back into the school. These facilities also cost more and this fact is hidden. 2. The bussing system, at present, is attrocious. Most students walk to their classes or drive. 3. If you're concerned about healthy eating, I recommend buying organic. The cafeteria uses foods with preservatives, as well as a lot of pork products. Their pizza is also pretty bad.

The cost. I do not live on-campus, I rent a condo from my family in a nearby burg of Atlanta, but even without the exorbitant housing costs SCAD asks of its boarding students, the school, though prestigious and industry-revered, is prohibitively expensive. I've had to borrow every penny not covered by scholarship, and now it's looking like it won't be enough. I love this school and what it has to offer me, but it does no good for me if I can't afford to attend.

The worse thing about SCAD is the crime-rate in Savannah. Students are often assaulted by disgruntled locals, and some cases have turned out to be extremely violent. Off-campus housing is often broken into, especially when students leave for the long winter break. On-campus living, however, is always well secured, with only minor incidents occuring from intruders on campus.

Miranda

The worst thing about my school is that it is too far from home! Although it attracts a considerable amount of international students, there is a strong sense of regional pride.

Emily

I am not very satisfied with some of the recent expansion efforts made by SCAD. I think they should focus primarily on their Savannah campus instead of trying to open new schools in other areas. I think all this expansion focuses too much on quantity and not enough on quality.

Hillary

I can't honestly say that there is a "worst " thing about my school itself. SCAD is really a wonderful place to go to school. a large amount of the area surrounding the campus however, is a very dangerous part of the Savannah. It is said that Savannah has the highest crime and murder rate in Georgia, and that entire statistic comes from the predominately black, project housing that exists around the campus. Savannah has 3 distinct sides that are very intermixed: Black Poverty and Prominent Wealthy Whites, and A Heck Of Alot Of Tourists.

Ana

Costly

Rachel

It is academically demanding.

Matthew

The worst thing about SCAD is that its persistant re-evaluation of itself, and continuous efforts to improve, sometimes leaves students in the dark immediately after the change i.e. new outsource contracts, new academic building mid year.

Matt

Lack of planning for working students. Class scheduling is convienient for those student who do not have to work to pay tuition, but working students often find themselves sacrificing a class they need in order to make rent.
