Southwestern Michigan College. The place I would soon call home. It sad that I will be leaving it for another school, though the time that I spent here was immaculate. I loved all of my professors and if things got a little too rough, I would be assured by those around me. I would feel safe no matter where I was because those around me were open enough to talk to me - even if we were complete strangers. I had the most fun within the arts department, being within all choirs and voice sections possible. While I did love my other class selections, the ones within the arts were my absolute favorite. I've met a lot of amazing and outgoing people within it and I am super grateful for the number of connections I was able to build from it.

I love the small class sizes, amazing teachers, and students! My favorite part is Criminal Justice club and the adventures we get to go on! Last year we got to go to Lansing to visit the Michigan State Police Academy and I was so happy because that is what I want to do after college!

Southwestern Michigan College does have much to offer, but it definitely needs tweaking.
The students currently at SWC and the alumni, claim it has a diverse environment. It does appear to be on the surface. The students racially segregate themselves and for students who are not accustomed to this, this separation is uncomfortable. The different races of students mostly interact with their own. If a student attempts to break through this division they are profiled and generally not accepted.
The teaching and administrative staff however is not diverse. The school claims they have many jobs for students, more than students they have to fill them, but you hardly see any of these student jobs filled by students of color. This is obvious when you look around. Some teachers profile and show racial favoritism. The teachers and administration are the models. If the teachers were more inclusive and friendly towards ALL students they would set a more overall inclusive tone.

I believe that from the time I attended SMC, I felt very welcome and accepted. I really enjoyed my time here and I would recommend it to anyone looking for a decent sized college to start their career with. The college is very immersed in the arts and gives each student a chance to show off their creative abilities.

Southwestern Michigan College is excellent for the student who wants to save money but also wants a great education. SMC has great learning resources and excellent staff. The population is small but great for the student who wants to create great relationships outside of class.

SMC is a great college! I am proud to say I am a student of this great schools. The teachers are great and always willing to help at all times. The school has helped me advance in my career path and, I have learned a lot both academically and human relation.

SMC was a great place to start my college career before transferring to a bigger university. It saved me a lot of money, which is a big plus for someone who has to pay for college by themselves. The overall atmosphere was fairly laid-back, but the professors definitely made you work hard and gave you the grade you deserved based on that work, which is great. There were very few professors that had bad reputations, and I was lucky enough to have great teachers for all of my classes. The professors were generally down to earth, very friendly and approachable, and knowledgeable about the subjects they are teaching. Many of them would try to get the students to take a more active role in their learning, and some would even have fun games to play that would help illustrate something we were learning.
Besides that, there was a great gym with very accessible hours, as well as an awesome rockwall that should definitely be tried. The dorms are fantastic, and the on-campus cafes had good food. In addition, the bookstore carried a lot of necessities that would frequently save students a trip off-campus to a convenience store.
There clubs for just about any interest, and a lot of these clubs offered opportunities to go on exciting weekend trips. There were many social activities throughout the school year, including a good number of dances, that provided a great way to get to know your fellow students while having a blast.
Overall, I would 100% recommend this college for anyone who wants to save money by going to a community college before hitting the big universities.

Southwestern Michigan College is a community college located in a small town. Overall, the teachers are relatable and willing to talk to students when they need help. The college provides plenty of study areas for students to focus on their homework or just reviewing for tests. Along with this, there is the learning lab available to students at no extra charge, where they can seek out help from tutors in nearly any subject. While there are some issues in needing to be careful of what classes to take for transferring, overall the college is as I expected from a community college in this area.

I've enjoyed my time spent at SMC. However, it could use an on-campus grocery store with fresh produce; it would help hundreds of students who don't have regular transportation. There is a "roadrunner kitchen" which holds non-perishable foods but students can only have up to eight limited items and visit once a week. On campus activities are fun and creative, as well as off campus opportunities given to students in certain programs.

It is a good school, really easy to make friends. It's just in the middle of no where and there is not a lot to do unless you want to go on a long drive. The campus is really nice, it's not too big, walking distance to class is really nice. The teachers here are great, at least the ones that I have had so far!

SMC is a college filled with wonderful professors and staff. They all care about your academic success as well as your well-being. The professors are laid back and understand that things happen that can sometimes set you back a little. I always feel safe on campus. My study breaks consist of 10 minute walks around campus. Sometimes these breaks are at night and I never feel more safe to walk at night than I do on the SMC campus.

Great starter school to knock out your basics, pretty pricey community college but great if you plan on transferring to Ferris State University because they have a transfer agreement. Anywhere else though you will end up retaking a lot of classes because they don't transfer. Teachers and faculty are great always there to help, student body is alright I met some pretty cool people from different backgrounds. Housing is packed with drama (depending on the hall you choose) as there is nothing to do in the area so everyone just picks fights. This is a growing school so there are always new opportunities on the rise, they're always looking for people to start new clubs. Great school if you want to stay close to home, definitely worth checking it out.

I think that Southwestern Michigan College has a great group of students as well as staff. I always feel like I can receive help if I need it, but they do not offer as many outside activities. I would love to be able to do more both on and off of the campus.

SMC is a good starter college. It will put you on the right track to go to a larger university. The faculty do their best to help students. There is also always some type of activity going on the students can participate. A safe environment to learn and grow as a person and student.

What should every freshman at your school know before they start?
My last year of high school was a point in my life when i realized who I wanted to become. Actually, acheiving that goal was harder than I thought. My main priority was furthering my education at someone's College or University. Not onkly did I want to learn new things, but I wanted to share my experiences with my peers. If I could go back 14 years ago, this is the advice I would give myself. Don't hesitate to continue my education once I graduate. Immediately enroll in college that following semester. Prolonging will hinder my mind and ability to become successful. I am ready to work at my goals and reveal my potential, so in the future I could provide my family and I with foundation. I wouls not have any kids or a boyfriend while attending school. so all my focus and attention could be on my profession. Also, I would major in Medicine and minor in Computer Info Sysytems That was one of my biggest mistakes when I attended Longwood University. I let other people convince me, because computers were starting to take over the world. Knowledge is power and it reflects who I am.
Describe how your school looks to someone who's never seen it.
It supplies students with a cheap turition that allows them to start school before transferring to a four year college, and it acts as a good transition from high school to college life.
What kind of person should not attend this school?
People who should not attend this school are people who have a 4 year degree in mind already and have access to a 4 year university with that major that they want. If you are not sure about a major attend Southwestern Michigan College first.
Our school is best known for starting people off on the right track towards their major. After the first two years at Southwestern Michigan College the advisors will help you transfer to a 4 year university if you wish to continue. They offer a tremendous amount of help with the looking for universities.
All students must apply yearly for financial aid. This process starts with the FAFSA.
Though financial aid deadlines vary by school, it is a good idea to apply as soon as possible. For the upcoming school year, you can apply as early as October 1 for the FAFSA. Additional school aid will be dependent on the FAFSA results.
