What are the most popular student activities/groups?

Ali

There are hundreds of student activities/groups at Temple. People party a lot. A popular event that happens every spring is the Spring Fling (A greatly enjoyable event full of games and a lot of fun).

Christopher

The most popular activities are, of course, sports. There’s a lot of school spirit – especially for the Temple Owls.

At Temple, most people you'll talk to have been to at least one party in the most recent month. Drinking and drug use is constant. The most suprising aspect of this is the prominence of smoking on campus. I had no idea how many people at Temple smoked and most of my non-smoking friends started a few months into their first term. Of course, you'd find lots of people who aren't doing it but you'll have to pass by a bunch of people who are. The MCPB (Main Campus Program Board) organizes events and they're great things to go to if you want to be sober. Also, there's a movie theater called the Reel open on weekends that shows late-release movies for $2. It's the cleanest, quietest movie theater I've found in Philadelphia so far. Off campus is brimming with things to do. It would be very hard not to be able to find something you'd want to do in Philly. There's a subway stop on campus and I can't think of any activity it won't bring you to. Also, lots of kids have bikes, which is a cheaper transportation solution. There's even a group of kids who meet up at the bell tower at midnight on Tuesdays to ride to the art museum to buy pretzels. Like I said-- literally anything. Just be careful about where you go and as a rule make it South of campus.

Groups involving your major are really popular. -Temple Ad Club, Communications Studies Club, Black Engineers Association, just a few to mention.

Jennifer

are probably sports. Every one gets really hyped up during football season.

I think that one of the most popular campus organizations is Campus Recreation. They run both Temple's intramural teams as well as the club sports. Temple has about 27 club sport teams. I am actually a member of club field hockey. Joining this team has been one of the best decisions I made as a student here. I get to play the sport I love at a competitive level, without being on the division 1 team. It was also a great way to make friends within the first few weeks of college. Another type of activity I would like to touch on is Temple Greek Life. Temple has 36 Greek organizations. Ten of the male organizations are part of the Inter fraternal Council, four of the female organizations are members of the Panhellenic Council, and the rest are multicultural organizations. Greek life is not a huge scene on Temple's campus, but this is why I want to talk about it. As a member of a sorority here, I feel unique, not just one of the crowd. It is also a entirely different community in and of itself, which makes it easy to meet a lot of people because you share something so important in common. At many large schools, if you join a sorority or fraternity you are simply just another student with letters on. However, at Temple you are seen as a leader and unique individual.

Temple athletics are very important, and many students come out to support their school at games. Music and theater are also very important and filled with the most amazing talent. The dramas and musicals put on in Temple's Tomlinson and Randall Theatres are amazing. Partying is definitely an option if you so choose, but it doesn't dominate the social scene. On Friday nights the student center hosts events until late with free food and activities. If you don't want to do anything at Temple, you can head into center city where there is always something to do.
