Describe the students at University of California-Santa Barbara.

Kristin

UCSB is not a very diverse campus, with mostly white middle-to-upper class students attending. Most UCSB students are originally from California, with the occasional out-of-stater. This is a very friendly campus; i feel that everyone here feels accepted and finds their group of friends. This campus is VERY liberal, and the campus can generally be described as free-spirited surfer-intellectuals!!

Andy

Have no idea they even exist.

Alex

A student who doesn't like to socialize probably shouldn't come here.

Alex

students in the greek system mainly hangout/party with just eachother. outside of the greek system there are many different groups of students.

i often wear jeans a t shirt. there of course are some people who like to dress up a little for class, but the majority of people wear comfortable, casual clothes that they can walk/bike in, as well as wear in lectures. i think most political backgrounds are left, but i am very right, and havent had to many problems. sometimes it is irritating when your professor is very liberal because they will preach to you about their beliefs and you have to listen. but i feel that everyone id used to this to some degree by the time they are going to college.

Alex

i don't think that anyone would feel out of place at ucsb. there are opportunities for everyone here. there are so many diverse groups on campus that are all established for different causes. the population at ucsb is pretty mellow. most of the students here live up to the beach town stereotype and usually just wear jeans and rainbows to class. the majority of students i have met are either from so cal or nor cal but i do have some out of state friends. there are definitely politically aware students here. it seems that our school is pretty liberal considering all of the anti-war protests all the time. there are a variety of financial backgrounds-some people are very well-off, many are middle-class, and many receive financial aid which is very helpful.

Christine

This campus isn't the most diverse place that is for sure. I would recommend it for people who are out to have a fun and chill college experience but who also want to walk away from college with a degree that means something and has credibility. The students are fun and the Greek life is a blast. It is a campus though that you don't have to be Greek to still have a good time at.

lydia

People where shorts and flip flops. The dining commons are huge and everyone seems to sit everywhere. There are lots of political rallies, but the campus seems to be pretty spread across when it comes to political views. Different types of students interact, but it's limited...mostly people stick to with people with common interests.

Corey

Our Associated Students have a lot of outreach programs, and every year they throw a big party at the soccer stadium called Extravaganza, free to students, which feature big name mainstream and upcoming artists.

Katherine

Our student body is so relaxed, laid back, fun, outgoing, and smart.

Amy

From what I've experienced, UCSB is a very open-minded school. We have had two large peace/anti-war protests since I have been here. Personally, I wear sweats to class most of the time. Most of the time I go right from practice to class so I don't have time to change but it's not unusual to see others wearing sweats as well. Some girls seem to dress up a lot though, which I think is overkill especially since it's just class. I'd rather be comfortable so I can pay attention to the professor and/or subject material.

Jennifer

For the most part, our campus has a variety of people. A lot of people would say that it is a very white based campus, which I guess may be true according to the numbers. However, as an asian-american, I don't feel out of place here at all and I think that this campus has a wider variety of people than it gets credit for. Most UCSB students are from California. I would say it is split between Northern California and Southern California pretty equally. There are a few people from out of state; however, it is rare because UCSB is very hard to get into.

Marie

Very laid back atmosphere. Wide variety of people. All races, hippie like atmosphere at times. Since being here i have probobly worn jeans and makeup to class maybe twice, very relaxed. Many students are from LA, San Diego area but many from up north and around the nation. A pretty liberal campus, but all views heard. Very active in current events. Not 100 percent athletic oriented. People are focused but not overly competitive.

Rebecca

Anyone that is not caucasian has the possibility of feeling out of place at UCSB. While students here are definitely tolerant of LGBT, it is not something that is frequently seen on campus, other then the classroom. Students generally wear beach-style clothing and sweatpants to school. Additionally, American Apparel has taken over. Students are generally on the liberal side and come from upper middle class backgrounds.

Alexandra

The Student Body is very beachy, and very laid back. We wear jeans and sweaters to class, or whatever fits your style. I would like to believe no one really judges anyone else, and that everyone actually gets along and interacts. In my sections I know I have spoken with and done projects with great people who I would have normally not thought to be friends with. I would say most students are from California, not only southern, there are many northern California students here too. Financial backgrounds vastly vary. For instance, in my sorority alone I know there are many girls on payment plans and who have taken out loans for school. As long as you're here to learn and have a good time no one cares about your financial situation and how you're paying for everything. Many students are politically aware, I would say we are primarily liberal due to our anti-war marches and posters-but all and all we are a peaceful bunch who look out for the under-dog.

alexa

UCSB is very diverse - there is a group for every social, political, sexual, and cultural identification on campus to join.

Carson

UCSB is an extremely diverse community. Although most UCSB students are from California, there are many students from different states that also attend.

Blake

We need more diversity!! LGBT is becoming a bigger part of our campus with lots of safe spaces for them. I have found that students from different types do interact, and some of those interactions are hostile :( and there are way too many rich people.

Jess

To be honest I am not very familiar with this topic at hand.

Katie

The student body here is very dynamic.... although it is the UC with the most white students, there is still an opportunity for cultural involvement and such. If you are not social, UCSB probably isn't the best place for you.... unless you plan on studying ALL the time. The majority of the student body, or so I've heard, have families with an income of approximately $100,000 per year. A great percentage of students do however have some form of financial aid.
